23:12EST - ASp v.0.81 for Amiga Released

ASp v.0.81 for Amiga, a Sinclair ZX Spectrum emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes.

  • Somewhat less buggy TZX support, plus the addition of a tape browser. There is now also some crude tape noise.
  • Most TZX files will be useable, but there are several TZX blocks which are ignored still. See the docs for more info.
  • Although this is a general release, there is still considerable work to be done to the behaviour of the system and the way it interacts with the user. Since there is quite a list of modifications to be done and I don't know when I'll get round to doing them, and this version appears to be stable with (apparently) no MuForce/MGA hits, it is worth releasing.
  • Aside from the usual bug reprts and things, I would be particularly interested in user's opinions of how you would like the tape deck controls to look and operate. The present system is simplistic to say the least.
  • Also, URL's of TZX's containing some of the less-seen blocks, such as Direct Recording, Embedded Snapshot, Call/Return, etc. would be helpful if these blocks are to be implemented and/or tested.

  • Troy McLeod as the new Developer
    Known Problems:

  • Timing is probably off & the core needs more speed-ups

22:34EST - MAMED Beta 4 for Dreamcast Released

MAMED Beta 4 for Dreamcast, a MAME Multi-Arcade emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes.

  • The latest mame core removes 8-bit support so I probably will not update to that, because some games will run out of memory in 16-bit mode.
  • The 68K cpu emulation should be fixed however some sound drivers still appear to not work, outzone for one.
  • Be sure to turn off sound in those games or memory corruption could occur. Hopefully I can fix it next time around.
  • There is a memory gauge built into the options menu so you can see how much memory is being used for certain games.
  • Memory is very tight in some larger games, some will not even run if you use hyper's menu and the pack must be run directly from kosh or boot.rc, outzone again is one of those.
  • I modified hyper's menu for the extra pack 16 & neomamed, the menu will also wrap now.
  • You can also exit back to hyper's menu from each pack, this cleans up any memory fragmentation that has occured while running a particular pack.
  • There is also an option to hide clones which is nice to clean up the game list a little.
  • Fake sound also works now.
  • Many games that didn't work before should work now.
  • Also four controllers are supported the first one controls the menus, the buttons changed a bit because the joysticks are supported as true joysticks (with analog support) instead of mapping to the keyboard, you still don't need a keyboard to play

We have abandoned the "beta" numbering scheme, which was becoming pointless.
The current version is 0.53 because 0.36 (the last "non-beta" release) + .16
(the number of "beta" releases since then) = 0.52.

Cops, Mystic Riders, Major Title 2, Hook, R-Type Leo, In the Hunt, and
Perfect Soldiers. [Bryan McPhail, Nicola Salmoria]

- Fixed a EX550x bug that caused Taito F3 and Incredible Tech games to sound
  bad. [Aaron Giles]

  [Aaron Giles]

  called "DMAME".

- [Windows] CLI improvements:
  * config option for steadykey (default: OFF)
  * parse debug.ini in debug builds
  * mamew \anywhere\roms\pacman.zip works
  * improved -log option
  * mame will now parse argv[0].ini instead of mame.ini.
i.e. if the mame executable is called "m37b17.exe" it will
    parse m37b17.ini instead of mame.ini
  [Paul Priest, Bernd Wiebelt]

- [DOS] Support for C64/Atari/Sinclair joysticks connected via DB9 or
  Turbografix interface. [Aley Keprt]

Source:
-------

- Big changes to the palette system. 8-bit modes are no longer supported, only
16-bit ones are used. 8-bit support may be removed from the OS dependant
code; the core will never ask for an 8-bit deep screen. 8-bit bitmaps could
  still be used though.

- Palette compression has been removed. palette_recalc(), palette_transparent_pen
and palette_used_colors[] are not available anymore. Drivers that relied on
PALETTE_COLOR_TRANSPARENT for transparency effects must be rewritten to
implement them differently. As a result of this, all games using the Taito
TC0480SCP video chip, and all Taito F3 games, are broken in this release.

- tilemap_update() is gone. Everything is handled by tilemap_draw().

- IMPORTANT CHANGE FOR PORTERS: the OS dependant code is now required to
guarantee, in 16-bit palettized mode, that Machine->pens[i] == i. The "pens"
argument to osd_allocate_colors() will be NULL, actually it has been renamed
"rgb_components" since direct RGB modes are the only ones that will pass that
  argument.

- Remove VIDEO_MODIFIES_PALETTE and the "modifiable" parameter from
  osd_allocate_colors().

- New flags VIDEO_HAS_SHADOWS and VIDEO_HAS_HIGHLIGHTS that automatically extend
the palette creating a darker(brighter copy for shadows handling.
  palette_set_shadow_factor() and palette_set_highlight_factor() allow to
control the adjustment to apply (shadow can be > 1.0, making it an highlight,
and highlight can be < 1.0 making it a shadow - the names are just conventional).
  [Nicola Salmoria]

- New function palette_set_brightness(), allowing selective control of palette
brightness independently of the palette RAM contents. [Nicola Salmoria]

- MachineDriver.color_table_len can now be 0, meaning that the colortable is a
1:1 mapping from the palette. Note that you CANNOT use this feature if you use
TRANSPARENCY_COLOR; but of course, if you need TRANSPARENCY_COLOR you'll not
  have a 1:1 colortable.

- New function tilemap_draw_roz(). [Phil Stroffolino]

- New function auto_malloc(); this is the same as malloc(), but the memory is
automatically freed when the driver exits. [Aaron Giles]

- osd_bitmap.line is now a void ** to prevent confusion.

--------------------

Mazinger Z [Luca Elia, Nicola Salmoria]

23:56EST - Real Spectrum Beta #11 for Win 9X

Real Spectrum Beta #11 for Win 9X, a Sinclair ZX Spectrum emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes.

  • FastLoading: a cool tape loading acceleration technique which works will all loaders, including those not covered by FlashLoading. It dramatically reduces the loading time of any tape by at least 5-8 times, with the emulator still running at the usual 50 fps. But with the "warp" setting (ALT-F7), the boost reaches an amazing 30x-50x and above, depending on the speed of your PC! Check out the FastLoading section of the manual for more information.
  • Action recorder: RealSpectrum can now record and playback all the keyboard and joystick events! Thanks to AIR files (Advanced Input Recording) you can do several nice things, such as record the moves to finish your favourite games and create your own collection of game solutions to put online, or take part in the available online game tournaments where you can challenge other players to reach the highest scores in some classic games. Check this section of the manual for more information and links!
  • Brand new debugger: the oldest source code of RealSpectrum, still intact since the very first release, has been blasted away and replaced with the new powerful and colourful debugger where nearly everything is now possible (to be completed) ;-) Check out the new section in the manual, or press F1 for a list of the keys.
  • New Spectrum graphic modes: basic support for some ULA video tweaks available for Pentagon, namely hardware multicolor and GigaScreen. The effects can be activated from the extra video preferences menu (ALT-F11). More modes available soon.
  • RealDisk improvements: the RealDisk system supports also 5.25" disk drives, and Track Caching is now handled automatically. Support for EDSK reading for +3 disks (but not only), please check the new section called "Reading disks in +3 modes" which describes the DSK customization panel. More compatibility with +3 disks, especially copy-protected ones.
  • Improved +3 disk emulation: several enhancements and bugfixes to the FDC 765 disk controller, especially concerning non-standard disks and copy-protected games (CP/M, Dragon Ninja, Dynasty Wars, Alkatraz and Speedlock loaders, etc). Added 720K DSK type in ALT-F6. Softlock and PowerLoad FlashLoading: with the addition of these two loaders, many more games can be loaded instantaneousely directly from TZX files.
  • Tape rewind and eject: check out ALT-F7 for these new functions concerning tape loading.
  • Graphic OSD: on-screen icons have been introduced to represent the emulator status and global events, such as tape/disk loading (play, rec, fast/flash), network activity, audio/video/action recording/playback, and so on. From ALT-F11 you can customize the display corner where the icons appear and their number (also from the INI).
  • Better sound: much louder and consequently cleaner audio (+12dB in dynamic range)! We finally found a method to convince the external audio library not to scale down the output level of our sound stream, which also reduced the dynamic range (clarity). This only affects the soundcard output (speakers/headphones), while WAV/AVI recording has always been ok. If it's too loud now, adjust the "MasterVolume:" setting into the INI :-)
  • SpecDrum emulation: another popular 8-bit digital sound interface, selectable from ALT-F12.
  • Multiprint emulation: another Multiface-like interface from Romantic Robot with advanced support for printing. It is selected as an additional Multiface variant in F3+F3.
  • Issue 2 emulation: the keyboard type can be changed from the properties menu for the Spectrum 16K and 48K (F3+F3), or set into the INI file.
  • Greyscale color mode: a new setting in ALT-F11 can turn RealSpectrum in greyscale mode (black and white), great for watching MB-02 Multitech images.
  • Post-rendering graphic effects: another option added to ALT-F11 which allows you to apply additional visual effects to the Spectrum video. In this release the only filter available is Chunky Vision, designed for viewing demos which use the 4x4 monochrome pixel chunks (Refresh and many many others). Requires additional CPU power. See the manual for more information.
  • Tape noise: now RealSpectrum fills the silence gaps with some artificial noise like on a real tape; this accomodates some weird loaders. This feature can be disabled from the INI.
  • Enlarged ProfROM support: now RealSpec accepts also 128K and 256K versions in addition to the full 512K ROM. The fileselector now remebers the last directory accessed for each file type, and the position of the highlight bar.
  • Moved the IDE control panel from ALT-F4 to CTRL-F4. ALT-F4 now shows the Action Recorder menu.
  • Automatic model switching: if this new setting (CTRL-F1) is enabled, RealSpectrum will change the computer model automatically when you load a snapshot file (previous versions of the emulator never do this). The default value for this option can be specified into the INI file with the "ModelSwitching:" line.
  • Many bugfixes (INI parser, double-sided DSK files, FDC765, .ROM loading, TAP/TZX saving, WD1793, Z80 core, CPU detection).
  • Updated the FAQ section of the manual with more common questions and troubleshooting.

Sintendo v.Beta 0.10 Pre-relase 2 for Dreamcast, a Nintendo NES emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes.

  • A full load ROM fix. ROMs should load every time, correctly, from this point forward. This is not to say that all ROMs play on Sintendo, because there are still compatibility issues with games like Yoshi's Island and Megaman X2/X3 that should be familiar to anyone who's used Snes9x. Also, hi-res games still don't run due to previous lack of memory, although this may be fixed soon.
  • Someone commented that the borders in TV Mode were too large, so they have been reduced. An extra option was added in the Video Mode menu to allow TV Mode with either small (default) or large (the old default) borders
  • Selecting an option or canceling from the Frame Skip, Transparency, or Video Mode menus now returns you to the In-Game menu, where you can then choose Return to Game. This is helpful because going to the In-Game menu auto-saves the VMS File, which takes a short ammount of time. Now, this is only done once and you can change all three options before returning to the game.

19:59EST - Gleck v.0.0.5 for Win 9X Released

Gleck v.0.0.5 for Win 9X, a Sinclair ZX Spectrum emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes.

  • Implemented a dialog to see and change the contents of the disk drives.
  • Added support for multiple drives.
  • Fixed a bug when pausing GLECK at the time the TR-DOS ROM was paged in.
  • The console works much faster and it doesn't flicker anymore.
  • Finally implemented a first version of disk support. The only format supported is .TRD, which is used by Pentagon and Scorpion models, although I'm also working on +3 drive emulation. Only reading is allowed. No writing support yet.
  • Started writing a "framework" to support different disk drives configurations.
  • Rough attempt of TRD emulation. I can only try it on Pentagon, because the Scorpion emulation is still non-functional.
  • I've installed Windows 2000, which let me do some tests that Windows 98 didnt allow me to do. For instance, I spotted a lot of bugs due to not releasing GDI objects after using them, which wasted lots of resources. It's fixed now.
  • Added an option to alter the palette, modifying each color's RGB values.
  • Implemented ROM patches. Right now, the tape loading routines are patched so it's not necessary to check the PC after every instruction. This lead to a slight FPS increase.
  • Changed the keyboard configuration: Right Shift now equals Caps-Shift. Left Shift now equals Symbol-Shift. Caps-Lock now equals Caps-Shift + 2. PC's cursor keys now equals Spectrum's cursor keys. Left and Right Control keys now are only used for joystick emulation.
  • 8 bit Stereo sound mode now sounds at the right pitch.
  • Scanlines graphic modes now sense the borders to see if they must be redrawn. This increases the speed.
  • Optimized by hand part of display routines. Achieved a 10 FPS increase.
  • TZX "Select" block is now handled.

22:55EST - PocketGB v.1.38 for Win CE ARM, MIPS, and SH3 Released

PocketGB v.1.38 for Win CE ARM, MIPS, and SH3, a Multi-Platform emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes.

  • Casio Virtual Pad: I finally bought a Casio EM-500 and was able to correct this. It turns out this device is double-buffered, so when GAPI is active, none of the GDI calls make it through. This took quite a lot of debugging time to iron out.
  • Due to the changes I had to make to the video code, paused games will no longer display the last image of the game.
  • Playing on the Casio made me realize how necessary it is for me to make optimizations to the code. I plan on making bug fixes and optimizations for the next couple of months before adding new features again.
  • Single Thread: PocketGB is now single threaded again. Everything should work the same, except that hopefully response from the UI will be a little snappier.
  • Auto Pause: Introduced an auto pause bug in the last build that was corrected.

22:43EST - Sintendo v.0.10 beta for Dreamcast Released

Sintendo v.0.10 beta for Dreamcast, a Nintendo NES emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes.

  • Improved menus allow access to all ROMs and have no minimum numver of ROMs.
  • Full suite of VMU saving/loading features that allow VMU replacement during gameplay and confirms saving behavior.
  • VMU menu allows removing/inserting of VMUs and allows you the option to not save (press B).
  • If you chose the wrong memory card or accidently hit B, insert or remove a memory card to get back to the menu.
  • Adjustable frameskip runs a full gambit of 24 option frameskip selections, from barely any frameskip to barely any frames shown. 30/60 - 50/60 frames skipped is recommended for optimal gameplay.
  • Proper use of frameskip allows gameplay at 100% speed with some jerkiness which may be minimal for most games.
  • Transparencies! Disabled by default, may be enabled/disabled during gameplay through In-Game menu. (Slows down gameplay somewhat - but Zelda is beautiful).
  • Optional folder browsing of ROMs. Virtual infinite number of ROMs through folder recursion, place ROMs in a sub folder of SNES and they may still be accessed.
  • Reorganized In-Game menu that is hopefully more logical than previous versions.
  • TV Mode (default) cuts a small border arround all edges so entire SNES screen is visible. VGA Mode (available through In-Game menu) runs full screen and some parts of the screen may not be visible on TVs.
  • Controller Config/Credits still unavailable from In-Game menu.
  • No Sound.

22:33EST - Final Burn Alpha v.0.129, 0.130, & 0.131 for Win 9X Released

Final Burn Alpha v.0.129, 0.130, & 0.131 for Win 9X, a Multi-Arcade emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes.

FinalBurn Alpha v0.131

What's New
  1) Now compiled with Christophe's Alpha 5 Kaillera code.
  2) Fixed the crash when using Strider Hiryu (USA).
  3) Multiple ROM path support added courtesy of HyperYagami.

=================================================================

FinalBurn Alpha v0.130

What's New
  1) Now compiled with Christophe's Alpha 4 Kaillera code, a new
version of the kailleraclient.dll is also included in this
     release.
  2) Added lots of new drivers for Street Fighter (C.E. & Turbo),
mainly clones though, thanks to everyone who donated these.
Too many to mention here, but SF2 Red Wave & Rainbow Edition
     are included.
  3) Drivers added for Magic Sword (Mike Hagger) and UN Squadron
     (KEV).
  4) Added my own Knights of the Round driver, thanks go out to
Mike Hagger for fixing the Gfx issues. Unfortunately the in
game controls don't work at present :(
  5) In theory it should be possible to play against someone who
is using FinalBurn Kaillera Alpha 4, as both use the same
code. That said, it would be better if you play against
someone who is using v0.130 :)

=================================================================

FinalBurn Alpha v0.129

What's New
  1) There's no need to use patched XOR's anymore! Armwar, Pgear
& Pgearr1 now use the original XOR tables released by Raz.
A very big thankyou goes out to Raz & Dayvee for helping me
     solve this problem :)
  2) Pgearr1 now works correctly, and no longer reports the
     "1010 EXCEPTION 0000716C" message.
  3) Re-ordered the games list. CPS-1/CPS-Changer games can now
be found at the bottom of the game list, in alphabetical
     order.
  4) Forced "bReadInputEveryFrame" to default as "0" (off).
According to Raz this should help with the netplay. The
"bDrvSaveAll" option should also be set to "0" if you are
     using the netplay feature.

22:13EST - Z81 v.2.0 for Unix Released

Z81 v.2.0 for Unix, a Sinclair Z81 emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes.

  • Better display emulation, leading to better emulation all-round. This still isn't perfect, but it already seems to cope with everything z81 1.x did, plus a bit more. Notable additions are Rock Crush, Dan's Revenge, and QS Defender (though it's so overscanned it doesn't fit in the normal display). Also, high-score entry now works in ZX Galaxians, and the display no longer `goes weird' when updating on the ZX80. :-) Thanks to Wilf Rigter (and his zx81vid.txt) for the timing info and detailed description the new display stuff was based on.
  • Optional sound emulation. This comes in two forms - VSYNC-based (aka `turn up the volume on the TV' :-)), and AY-3-891x-based (sound addons). The sound addons currently supported are the Quicksilva sound board, and the Bi-Pak Zon X-81 (thanks to Andy Styles for info on this). The sound code was based on my work for Fuse, so Matan Ziv-Av and Philip Kendall also deserve some credit here.
  • Added ZX Printer support, which was an easy port from xz80. Thanks to Ian Collier for this, obviously. :-) The main difference in z81 is that it outputs (as a picture) to a PBM file rather than an X bitmap.
  • With `-l', you can now boot directly to the file selector (at least when emulating a 16k ZX81).
  • You can now enable display of the VSYNC signal with `-V'. This is useful if you want FAST mode to blank the screen, or want to see LOAD/SAVE signals onscreen when using `-L' or `-S' (see below), but tends to be an annoyance otherwise which is why it's not enabled by default.
  • The LOAD and SAVE hooks can now be disabled, with `-L' and `-S' respectively. This is mainly so there's something easy to get at which makes a noise :-) (i.e. use `-sS' then save something).
  • A keyboard port fix means that Namtir Raiders now works. Also fixed reversed key-reading when more than one bit was zero in the port's MSB - I don't think that affected much though.
  • You can now directly emulate a 1k machine, with `-u' (= unexpanded).
  • The new `-i' option inverts the screen, giving a white-on-black display.
  • Fixed some problems with signal blocking when exiting.
  • The X version previously ignored any `-r' setting - fixed.
  • Auto-load (loading from the command-line) is slightly better than before - it now starts up the program `instantly'. This is probably just as well, as the better display emulation means the emulator can't really `fast-boot' any more except when loading a program.
  • It didn't previously load programs from command-line which ended in `.P' (it tried to add a further `.p') - it does now.
  • Removed the old `-s' for normal (slow) booting, as the only fast-boot option now available is auto-loading (see above).
  • Removed z81txt (the Linux-console-specific text version). I thought about some way of making it work with the new display code by interpreting characters in the screen bitmap, but it was really just too nasty an idea to be worth bothering with.
