PSXVideo 1.07 Yesterday, I posted a copy of PSXVideo, a utility that lets you watch PlayStation movies on a PC. The copy I posted was version 1.06. As it turns out, the latest version is 1.07. Thanks to megamanx for the e-mail. You can get it at: http://www.phoenix.net/~feldon/psxvideo.html Or you can download a copy directly from EMU News Service by clicking here. Unofficial PSEmu Pro FAQ [DoOm] has put together a make-shift FAQ on the new PSEmu Pro. If you're having trouble getting it to work, maybe this help: PSEmu Pro Released! The long awaited follow-up to PSEmu is now out! What's new in this release? Just check yesterday's news story "PSEmu Pro Scheduled for Release Tomorrow" for the full scoop. The official PSEmu webpage is down due to all the high traffic, but you can download a copy from EMU News Service by clicking here. Also feel free to try here. The version posted here earlier this morning did not have the readme.txt file included. You can download it by clicking here. Finally, if you try to run PSEmu Pro and it asks you for either Mfc42d.dll or Msvcrtd.dll you can download them by clicking here. Why not visit the chat room to talk about the lastest PSEmu? Zophar's Domain Is Back The current URL is: Can't Wait Till PSEmu Pro Is Released? It's no secret that there's a lot excitement over tomorrow's release of PSEmu Pro. After all, PSEmu is the world's first PlayStation emulator and it's been over 7 months since the last release. To whet your appetite I've uploaded a copy of PSXVideo - a cool little program that lets you watch PlayStation movies on your PC. Note: this is not an emulator, but it does let you watch and listen to Playstation videos on a regular computer. This program has been around for quite a while and has appeared here on EMU News Service a few times before, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who haven't heard of it. Again, this is NOT an emulator, just a video playback utility. Click here to download PSXVideo (Requires Windows 9x/NT). Also, here's a text file that provides a little trouble shooting help just in case you need it. RAINE 0.14 Released! This is turning out to be a great day for emulation fans. First, the new MAME beta was released supporting 30+ new ROM sets. Now Raine 0.14 has been released adding 14 new games:

The MAME webpage has not yet been updated with this release, but you can download a copy from SYS2064 or directly from EMU News Service by clicking here. Thanks to Till for the e-mail. PSEmu Pro Scheduled for Release
Tomorrow Tratax has made it official:
PSEmu Pro is scheduled to be released sometime tomorrow. It's been a long
time since the last PSEmu was released so lots has changed. First, PSemu
is now a Windows-only program; the DOS original has been canceled. Second,
PSEmu is much, much faster. It features full dynamic recompilation of the
R3000 and includes 3dfx support. If you have an MMX or 3D-Now CPU, PSEmu
Pro will run even faster. And since it's a Windows program, it will feature
a GUI (although it's nothing spetacular). In preperation of PSEmu Pro's
impending release Emulators Unlimited has conducted an interview
with Tratax, and also features a few advance screenshots:
![]() A new and unique feature to PSEmu is the ability for other programmers to write plugins for PSEmu. A plugin for PSEmu is a standard Win32 DLL developed to enhance PSEmu's functionality or performance. Because this technology is new (and not yet released) it's hard to say exactly where this will lead, but possible plugins could include optimized drivers for graphic or sound output, or joystick input. A developer kit will also be released that explains how write a PSEmu driver. Again, PSEmu Pro is scheduled
to be released tommorrow. According to the author, PSEmu Pro on a high-end
PC will actually be faster(!) than a real Playstation on some games. Stay
tuned...

First Screenshot of N64 Emulator Gordon Hollingworth was kind enough to provide us with a sneak peak at his upcoming Nintendo 64 emulator: ![]() Although no release date has been announced, NSFE will have support for OpenGL and 3DFx. While many people in the emulation scene previously thought that the N64 was "un-emulatable", Gordon has worked hard on doing exactly that. On March 31 of this year, Gordon released Reality64. It was little more than a CPU emulator - no games were playable. But since then, Reality64 has undergone many changes. At one point it was even canceled. But as luck would have it, Reality64 was eventually resurrected - and even given a new name: NSFE. Just recently, two new programmers have joined Gordon: Dan Guisinger (an expert in Windows programming) and Denis Oliver (experienced with both OpenGL and DirectX). Good luck goes out to the whole NSFE team! WinUAE 0.8.6 Release 3 Now Out! Brian King has released version 0.8.6 of WinUAE this morning. Here's what's new:

C64 Emulator for Java Thanks to an e-mail from Grey Ranger, I've "discovered" a new Commodore 64 emulator written in Java. I say discovered because this emulator has been around quite a while, only nobody's seemed to have noticed it. I checked a few other emulation sites and they make no mention of it. Although not very advanced, this is probably the first and only Commodore 64 emulator written for Java. Written by Thomas Gruber, this emulator originally began development 10 years ago for the Atari ST. Eventually it was ported to DOS and last year to Java. You can check it out at: 2600 Emulator Canceled Matthew Stroup has announced that has dropped development of Virtual 2600 Amiga in favor of doing an Amiga port of Brad Mott's Stella. Currently, Stella is available for DOS, Acorn, Windows 9x, Windows NT Alpha, Irix, Linux, Macintosh and OS/2. NESemu 0.30a Released! Kent Hansen has released a new version of NESemu. Well the makefile had a dep chain for m6808.o since it was build from a .asm which was made by make6808 which was made from make6808.c. "This seemed to work fine in rc1 but with the final I guess we were really stressing GNU make to much since (when using the asm6808) it stops with the following error: "no rule to make m6808.asm" "A work around for this is, simple retyping: 'make -f makefile.uni' - Hans de Goede
Also, Hans would like me to stress that if you already downloaded X-Mame 0.33.2 yesterday, there's no need for you to download it again. If you encounter the above error, just type 'make -f makefile.unix' to fix it. http://drake.dit.upm.es/~mame/index.html RockNES (xNES) 0.53 Release 3 Fabiano Lopes and Shane Harrelson have just released yet another new version of RockNES (formerly xNES). Paul Robson has just released a Nascom 1 emulator. Nascom 1 is older, somewhat obscure computer system. Based on a Z80 CPU, the Nascom 1 achieved its greatest popularity in the United Kingdom. "Hi Jim. My latest is an emulator for the Nascom 1, a British (only?) single board computer from the days when only the Pet, Trs 80 and Apple 2 were alternatives at three times the price. It's a Z80 machine with 2k of RAM, keyboard, 48 x 16 mono display, hardware single step and cassette I/O." - Paul Robson Written in 32-bit assembler, the Nascom 1 Emulator also features a built-in debugger. Paul Robson has written emulators for many systems, including the NES, Gameboy and the Atari 2600. Dan Boris (author of VSS, O2E and also a part of the MAME development team) has begun writing a guide for creating MAME drivers: "I have seen a lot of requests for information on how to write a MAME driver, so I finally sat down and wrote up something that might help. The documents I wrote takes a look at the driver for the game Zarzon and explains the details of each of the data structures that make up the driver. You can find the document on my Emulator Programming Page ... Please note that this is by no means a comprehensive description of how a MAME driver works, it's just an introduction." - Dan Boris X-Mame 0.33.1 Released! He has a very high level of experience with Windows, from kernel programming to graphics and some sound and networking. He also knows how to program hardware directly (in other words, he can help with emulation)... "I look forward to working with Dan and Denis and can assure you that we are all going to work very hard to get the emulator out..... "The most interesting thing that Dan has already suggested is that we add multi-player support (using DirectPlay) where up to four computers can act as the different controllers (as well as each computer displaying the output). This is ovbvisouly a little way down the line but is certainly an exciting idea." - Gordon Hollingworth
NSFE is a Nintendo 64 emulator

Psion Series 5 Tech Request I received an e-mail from a programmer named Darren Christie who's looking into writing a Psion Series 5 emulator. He's posted this request a few times in the newsgroups but so far not much has turned up. Hopefully, someone out there can help him. "I am currently looking in to writing a new emulator to emulate the Psion Series 5 ... Basically I need memory maps for the machine, binary formats used by the Series 5 and also info on the ROMs holding EPOC32. If anyone wants to supply the same info for the Series 3 (along with processor used), I will also look into adding that as well. Any other information on the Series 5 would be welcome also." Colors, however are not very accurate. Thanks to all who e-mailed. Emulation Zone May Be Closing Down The long standing site, Emulation Zone, is in danger of closing down. "This month, the Emulation Zone will be celebrating our second year of existence! But this could be our last yearly celebration. After this month, I will no longer be able to work on this page full time like I have in the past. With my absence, I'm afraid this page may perish. I refuse to let this happen while I still have time to steer this page away from this fate. If you are interested in helping us out here at the Emulation Zone, or want more info on our current situation then please check out http://www.vgernet.net/wacko/emulator/zone.htm." - Andrew Wolan Arcade Links Page News Another announcement regarding the links pages: I will now be maintaining the arcade links pages. The previous maintainer, XiP was only with ENS on a temporary basis, but I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the excellent work he has done for us over the past couple months. In my estimation, there are probably still a few arcade emulators missing so I will be updating them again shortly. In the meantime, feel free to e-mail me if you notice any mistakes or missing emulators. EMU News

http://www.sound.net/~rodimus/ Here's What's New in Nesticle x.xx: NES guru Jeremy Chadwick (aka Yoshi) was kind enough to send an e-mail telling us what's new in Nesticle x.xx. Here's a brief synopsis:
NSFE Author Interviewed An interview with Gordon Hollingworth can be found at: http://members.xoom.com/vipor/zsnes.html Sidewinder Support Confirmed I've received several e-mails confirming that Genecyst does now feature Sidewinder support. Thanks to Toten M, Rambisboy and everyone else for the e-mails. If you're joining us late, Sardu released new versions of both Genecyst and Nesticle earlier this morning. See the below news stories to catch up. New Apple Emulator Released! Steven W. Mentzer has released a new Apple ][ GS emulator based on Josh Thompson's XGS. Also, I've heard that Genecyst now has Sidewinder support. Thanks to PACHUKA and brandon m for the info. New Genecyst and Nesticle Released! Sardu has quietly and mysteriously released brand new versions of both Genecyst and Nesticle. I say mysteriously because the webpage makes no direct mention of the new releases. The version numbers are "x.xx" and the docs don't say what's new. The files are dated 1/1/00. One thing I did notice is that Genecyst's menu now has a new option for stereo sound (but it doesn't work for me). In any case, new versions of Genecyst and Nesticle (DOS only) are now out! I'll post more news as soon as I find it out. Stay tuned... http://www.maelstrom.net/callus/ You can also download Genecyst
x.xx and Nesticle x.xx directly from EMU

WWF Superstars is now playable and has sound support. http://raine.retrogames.com/index.html Console Links Page News This is just a small announcement to say that I will now be the maintaining the Console Links page myself. Over the past few months, the page has not been updated as much as I would like and as the saying goes if you want something done right do, it yourself. So I've gone through it, updated all the version numbers, fixed the broken links and added a few new emulators to it. But please take a look and if you see any mistakes or missing emulators, please feel free to e-mail me. EMU News

Dynamic Recompilation Help Request Gordon Hollingworth, author of Reality64/NSFE (both Nintendo 64 emulators) is requesting information on dynamic recompilation. Emulating a system as complex and demanding as the Nintendo 64 is a very difficult task so Gordon is looking into ways of improving NSFE's speed. Recompilation is a technique where you translate the binary ROM code directly into the native code of the target system. Static compilation does this *before* running the ROM - in essence creating a brand new executable file (aka load module) of the ROM image. Dynamic recompilation does essentially the same thing - except that it does it on the fly (i.e. while running the ROM image).
