New Windows Snes9X Released! Though it's been 3 months since the last time the Windows port of Snes9X was last updated, Jerremy Koot has now released version Snes9x 1.16a for Windows:

"Merry Christmas everybody. I hope everybody got what they wanted for Christmas this year. If not, just hope that you'll get it next year. If the Windows port of Snes9X was on your wish list then at least one of your wishes has come true. Finally after 3 months, a new Windows port has arrived. I'm sorry that it took so long, but I just didn't have the time to maintain it. Currently it doesn't have so many new features. But that will change in the coming weeks."

  • Pulled apart a real SNES using a crowbar (great fun), just to look at what speed the SPC700 is actually clocked at for more acturate relative emulation speed.
  • Implemented SPC700 cycle counting in the hope the improved timing would fix Tales'; no such luck but at least the -ratio option is obsolete now.
  • Implemented executing SPC700 instructions during DMA, fixes BS Zelda,  Goal and Smurfs 2 lock up at start and music pausing briefly when ROMs do  lots of DMA, usually between game screens.

  • and if so, what type.
  • InputSprocket is no longer required, but it is recommended.

IDSA Closes Down Lazarus The IDSA's Anti-Piracy Department has forced the closure of Lazarus, one of the most popular Amiga emulation sites in the world. The IDSA has alleged that Lazarus is in violation of international copyright law. The IDSA is quoted as saying, "...We request the removal of these pages as quickly as possible since they are infringing upon the rights held by our member companies."  This is the latest move in a series of actions of what the IDSA views as a campaign against software piracy. How long Lazarus will be down or in what form it will return if it does remains to be seen. Thanks to Rich Lawrence for the e-mail.

  • Implemented executing SPC700 instructions during DMA, fixes BSZelda and Goal lock up at start and music pausing briefly when ROMs do lots of DMA, usually between game screens.

  • The scanline modes are now driven by highly tweaked assembly, mostly because I changed the way they worked: they now show half-lumen lines interleaved instead of black ones. In a couple of the available graphics modes (GDI) even though a lot more work is being done it's slightly faster than the older scanline mode.
  • Last path used to load Atari executables is remembered
  • Some small code re-orgs (same functionality, but less code)
  • Fixed screen corruption in stretched-window modes when paused
  • Smarter about registry updates - doesn't have to reset ROM paths when these occur now. Also, for first time users tries to find the ROMS in either the working directory or "ROMS" subdirectory
  • Added different machine types in hardware selector for 320XE Compy and 320XE Rambo

Stylophone Emulator Mark Campbell has been writing a Stylophone emulator for the past year or so and is looking to hand the project off to someone else in order to finish it. The Stylophone for those who don't know is an electronic organ which has achieved cult status since it's release in Britain in the 1970's:

"I've been writing a Stylophone emulator for Windows for about a year or so and have finally reached the stage where my plans for the program have been restricted by my lack of programming skills. Therefore I am officially offering up the source for my program so that someone else can finish it off if they wish.

Full technical details of the entirely analogue circuitry is available to any mad person who wishes to take over the project. I'd like to see the project be given the DirectX treatment, as I've used very (VERY) simple code to play the sounds (after all this is my first windows program)."

The Stylophone Emulator is written in C and compiled on Visual C 5.0. If you wish to help Mark, he can be contacted at [email protected].

"We know everyone is waiting for a new release for a while now, but believe me when I say it will be worth the wait. There has been major sound code and core changes so we decided to wait until everything is more stable and tested before releasing a new version. We won't make any release dates public...it will be here when it's ready.

"Also all those Jaleco games are so nice that we decided to look for more, here are pictures of one of my favorites Jaleco shoot-em-ups called P-47.

All these games are playable in Raine with sound, keep an eye on this page because we have more news coming in the next days."

Although it won't be released until sometime next year, a PlayStation movie player for Macintosh is now out. Also, a new cheat utility has been released by Hartec/Dextrose called Cheat0r. This cheat manager has cheats for nearly 700 different games. You can download both the Playstation movie player (Mac) and cheat utility (PC) at:

Snes9x 1.15 Released! So far, this is turning out to be a pretty big day for emulator releases. First, Retrocade version 1.1 was released early this morning. Now the DOS port of Snes9x has been updated. A lot has changed. Here's what's new:

1.15 (Just Released!)

  • TeleKawaru has joined myself in Maintaining the Dos Port
  • Fixed a bug in config file support where the keyboard wouldn't work sometimes
  • Fixed other bugs in config file support
  • FPS Counter added to DOS Port. (not the same as Gary's) Use alt-F1 to activate.
  • Config file automatically re-creates itself if it's not there now
  • Message Display added. (Looks really neat) Works only in 16-bit modes
  • Freeze-file re-added again. (now it uses 3 keys instead of 20) Use F2 to save, F3 to change save-slot, and F4 to load.
  • Config file support almost complete
  • Added Surround sound effect. Thanks go out to Kreed who wrote the code.
  • Did some modifying of the save screen-shot code. It now works on American keyboards, and saves in the same directory as snes9x.exe (use the Print Scrn Key to activate)
  • Fast-forward/Normal keys redone. Now it uses only one key.
  • Fixed a bug in config file load/saving. Now it doesn't crash in certain situations.
1.14 (Not release publicly)
  • Implemented the Tales of Phantasia memory map using the information supplied by zsKnight. Had to also implement a de-interleave routine to work around a ROM feature and Snes9x CPU instruction fetching implementation detail.
  • Added a frames-per-second on-screen display option.
  • Fixed the final glitch bug with the Mario Kart track display - the byte code for the termination of the DSP1 raster command wasn't been recognized.
  • Disabled a NMI/DMA hack for Rise of the Robots, was causing problems for Mario Kart and 'Robots wasn't working correctly anyway.
  • Optimized the mode 7 rendering a little.
  • Changed tile rendering code to use offsets into screen buffer rather than direct pointers ready for z-buffer implementation.
1.13 (Not release publicly)
  • Changed V-blank NMI to occur immediately after a WAI instruction, Toy Story required this.
  • Fixed reading of H-DMA line counter register, Top Gear 3000 needed this.
  • Ripped off large parts of ZSNES's DSP1 code (with _Demo_'s and zsKnight's approval). Now Mario Kart works almost 100%.
  • Added a check to see if a vertical scanline IRQ register change will cause a H-IRQ later on the current scanline. Pilot Wings needed this.
  • Fixed possible crash bug in clip window code when both windows had two spans. Could actually cause Chrono Trigger to crash the emulator.
  • Fixed a lock-up problem with the C Super FX code, Star Fox and executing a few FX instructions per scan-line (required for Winter Gold).

Atari800Win 2.5 Released! Richard Lawrence has released a new version of Atari800Win! Here's what's new:

  • Consider this a beta release. It has not been tested extensively.
  • Any "sticky key" problems should be fixed on slow machines
  •  Warmstart reappears on F5 as if by magic :-)
  • Arrgh! ATR images formatted while loaded into the emulator were getting corrupted headers (they were reformatted as XFD). Modified SIO code so that any valid ATR image (even megadisks) can be reformatted by Atari800win.
  • Added option to load Atari executable files individually instead of requiring a disk image. This will NOT work for files that require Atari DOS.
  • John Frias contributed some icons
  • Fixed a problem with the R-TIME cartridge returning the incorrect month
  • Fixed a small timing problem on keyboard input.
  • Blank scan line option added for some video modes.
  • Built a new ZLIB DLL which appears much less touchy about alignment.
  • Drive status can be set directly from the disk drive dialog.
  • Corrected small joystick bug that prevented the keypad from working as joystick on port 1 while a real joystick was used on port 2.
  • Inserted a completely bogus wait after DDraw SetDisplayMode that corrects garbage sometimes left on the screen.
  • 640x480 is now a "no visible menu" mode. Use F10 to get a menu (or the   keyboard accelerators - e.g. Alt-A + L is Atari/Load Exe).
Atari800Win is an Atari 400/800 emulator. It also supports the Atari 5200 and the XE Game System.

NES4PC Progress Report David de Regt has given EMU News Service a little sneakpeek at the next release of NES4PC. Here's a sampling of what we can expect:

  • New 100% Scanline-based graphics engine (fast and accurate)
  • Tons of bugs fixed
  • Fully Implemented mappers 8, 11, 34, 64, 66, 71, 99
  • Mapper 4 support is now 100% Completed
  • Fixed Sprite #0 hit detect, which fixed a ton of games
  • And the big news... full zapper support (you can now play Duck Hunt)
NES4PC is an NES emulator for Windows.

New z26 Now Out John Saeger has just released a new version of his Atari 2600 emulator for DOS. Here's what's new in version 1.21:

  • You no longer need to type in the .bin extension for ROM filenames.
  • z26 is now a little bit configurable. If you type z26 followed by some command line switches, but you don't include a filename, z26 will remember the command line switches as defaults. These defaults can still be overridden with a command line that includes a filename.
  • The help screen that you get by typing z26 alone on a command line now has multiple pages. It comes up in graphics mode too.
  • A rare bug that occasionally caused graphics to be messed up at startup may have been fixed.

NeoMAME Apollo69 has released NeoMAME. This is a version of MAME with only Neo Geo support (all other drivers have been removed).  Why would anyone be interested in NeoMAME? Because without all the extra non-Neo Geo drivers, the download is only a half a megabyte. Of course this is useful for those who only use MAME for the Neo Geo support. Please note that NeoMAME is not made by the MAME team. Please do not bother them with support questions since they have nothing to do with it.
