ClassicGaming Shuts Down EMU News Service A quick announcement: Kevin Bowen, site director of ClassicGaming, has deleted the EMU News Service account at ClassicGaming. I can neither login or upload to my ClassicGaming account. Fortunately, I have a current back up of most of the files before the account was axed. As I said in my early announcement, I'm working on getting a new website up on another server. When it's ready it will have a new URL and I'll announce the new address here. Until then there will be no more daily updates. I'll be back in a few days. Stay tuned...

Nofrendo To Leave ClassicGaming Matthew Conte, author of Nofrendo, has decided to close his home for Nofrendo and move his emulator off of ClassicGaming.com.

"I disapprove of CriticalMass's business practices. I've done a little research into their business, and it's staggering how much money they make.  Therefore, I've removed the Nofrendo site from ClassicGaming, and am asking for anyone who can give me a home to contact me."

If you would like to help Matt out, you can contact him at [email protected].

http://www.classicgaming.com/nofrendo/

NOTICE: Matt has found a new home for Nofrendo. The new URL will be announced shortly

EMU News Service to Leave ClassicGaming I have a very important announcement to make and I'm not sure where to begin, but I'll try to do my best. A little less than a year ago, I moved this website from its original location on America Online to ClassicGaming.com.  Without going into the nitty gritty details, it was a mixed blessing. Sometime after my move, ClassicGaming.com (which is a part of Critical Mass) registered the domain name www.emunews.com. They did so without telling me. In fact, I didn't even find out about it until much later. You can imagine my surprise when I read about it in a posting on Zophar's Domain's message board.

Furthermore, for some reason, www.emunews.com leads to ClassicGaming.com's main webpage, not EMU News Service. When I tried talking to them about this, they refused to discuss it. In fact, they never bothered to respond to my e-mails or ICQs. This went on for months. I finally got sick of it and last week I sent them an ultimatum. Only then, did they finally respond. And when they did, they refused to transfer the domain name over to me. So I sent them a personal letter, pointing out all the things I have done for them over the past year and asked them to reconsider. They refused. I was told, in no uncertain terms, that ClassicGaming.com is not about emulation; that it's a business. They value money over people.

On the one hand, it's only a domain name. In the grand scheme of life it's not that important. But on the other hand, I sort of feel betrayed. I thought they were my friends. I thought they were people I could rely on. But they did all of this behind my back. For months, they continuously ignored my e-mails and ICQs. They handled this whole thing very unprofessionally. And even though I was willing to pay them what they paid for the domain, they still refused.

Before I go any further, I want to make it perfectly clear that I firmly believe that both ClassicGaming and Critical Mass are entitled to run their business anyway they want. I respect their right to run their business as they see fit. I have no quarrel with that. However, it is now clear to me that these are not the type of people I wish to work with or with which I wish to be associated. Therefore, effective March 1st, I am permanently moving EMU News Service off of ClassicGaming's server. It is vitally important that everyone go to this page and bookmark it now. If anything happens between now and March 1st, this page will be the only way you can find out where I've moved.

There's a very good chance that once ClassicGaming finds out that I've decided to leave, they will kick me from their server. You may come back tomorrow only to discover that this site doesn't exist anymore. So, please bookmark this site now. You may not get a second chance.

With that said, I fully intend to continue to update this page on a daily basis until March 1st (or as long as ClassicGaming/Critical Mass permits me to do so).  With any degree of luck, they might be nice and even let this site stay up for a couple months after I move so people can find my new address.

Also, I want to take this opportunity to make a second announcement. I've been working on a complete site redesign for some time now. With the exception of a few odds and ends, it's been done for almost 2 months now. But because I was having all these problems with ClassicGaming.com, I didn't want to debut the new design until these matters were settled. Even though things did not work out in my favor, I will debut the new EMU News Service about a week (or so) after it moves to its new location. It's going to really cool and you can expect to find quite a few sup rises :) I think everyone's going to like it a lot. And for those who were worried that I might change the site too much, worry no more. I have something special planned just for you.

Finally, I want to thank everyone for their support over the last 2 years. It's been a bumpy ride and this webpage could not have survived this long without your support. Thank you very much.

- Jim Pragit
Creator and Maintainer of EMU News Service

Again, please go to this page and bookmark it now.

Sega Smash Pack = KGen? It looks like then new Sega Smash Pack is none other than a new version of Steve Snake's KGen emulator! According to reader Chris F., if you look at the binary (smash.exe), it says "Encoded for KGen Ultra / Sega Smash Pack / Snake KML 1999".  After hearing the news, I went to my local Best Buy to buy a copy but they didn't have Sega Smash Pack in yet.  I was hoping to confirm this and test is out for myself. For those that have it already, is there anyway to get the smash.exe to run any other ROMs? Drop me an e-mail.)

Sega Releases Sega Smash Pack Sega has announced the release of a brand new software package for the PC called the "Sega Smash Pack."  It includes eight games (Altered Beast, Columns,  Golden Axe, Outrun, Phantasy Star 2, Sonic Spinball, Super Shinobi and Vectorman). Sega's announcement did not mention whether these games are ports or if they're emulated. Reality Man Interviewed! Reality Man, co-author of the now infamous UltraHLE, has been interviewed by Fixo of FixoFiles. Reality Man addresses UltraHLE origins, the Nintendo 64 ROM craze and the future of emulation itself. Among the quotes:

"I think that UltraHLE and the Sony/Connectix issue will get this thing sorted once and for all and vindicate all the emu authors and their work. Also, I feel that it (UltraHLE) will inspire seasoned and new authors to attain even better emulators because now they realize that anything is truly possible. The emu scene will grow from this and we will all benefit."

MacMAME 0.35 Beta 3 Released Brad Oliver has released MacMAME version 0.35 Beta 3. Here's what's new:

  • In sync with the DOS port. The PowerPC 6809 CPU core has been disabled for this beta, so those games that use it might run slower. It will probably return in a beta or two.
  • In the never-ending battle of memory allocation, the default size for MacMAME has been bumped up yet again to give Navigation Services some room. If you are not using OS 8.5 or later or you do not have Nav Services installed, you can probably crank the memory back down a few hundred k.
  • I've enabled the code which attempts to allow you to use the right modifier keys - the right shift key, etc. However, none of us has gotten it to work, so don't expect it to do anything. Apparently the proper code to enable this is shrouded in mystery and protected by monks up on a cloud-covered mountain. If you have information that will make this feature work, by all means take a look at the source code, in particular "macinput.c" and tell us what we're doing wrong.
  • In other source-code related news, we've documented the bug in the CodeWarrior Pro 4 optimizer which affects MacMAME and several of its source files. It was submitted to Metrowerks in December and no fix is yet on the horizon. It's disturbingly common to run into, so if you are curious about the details, read the documentation that is included with the Mac source distribution.
Note: if you downloaded a copy of MacMAME earlier this morning, Brad has issued a bugfix (version 0.35 Beta 3a) that fixes a bug that caused some keyboards locking up.

DarcNES for DOS Updated Sephiroth has just released a new version of his DOS port of DarcNES. The biggest news is that you can now add TurboGrafx16 as one its emulated systems, although TG16 support is still rudimentary.

Direct from Sephiroth's announcement, here's what's new:

  • Implemented proper video_setsize() function
  • Because of the above, some PC-Engine demos (and some games) are working!!! Double Dungeons is playable, and Jamanoid shows the title screen/level select.
  • Modified screenshot code to capture only the game image, not the whole screen. Now NES/TG16 screenshots are 256*240, and SMS ones are 256*190
  • Now the video code detects correctly which system is being emulated, and selects the correct size for the game screen. So, there's no garbage at the bottom of the SMS screen anymore.
DarcNES is a NES, TurboGrafx16, Sega Master System and Game Gear emulator for DOS. DarcNES is also available for Linux.

DBOY 0.44a Released Yep, another DBOY. I'm not sure what's new since there's no translation yet available, but judging from the version number, it's probably a fairly minor release.

Kazzuya To Leave PSEmu Pro Much like the Chicago Bulls, the PSEmu development team continues to dissolve. Today, Davide "Kazzuya" Pasca has announced that he too is leaving the project:

"... I eventually received an offer from a game company that I esteem so much to be flattered just for being considered from them. Unfortunately one of their requirements is for me to stop working on PSEmu ... I could release, after consulting Duddie and Tratax, the sources publically. But there are enough 'emulamers' out there just waiting to compile PSEmu under a different name and look ... I can't continue on the project but I know some programmers that are very skilled and, most importantly, knowledgeable of PlayStation hardware to whom I can pass the ball."

- Davide "Kazzuya" Pasca

Nintendo to Take Legal Action Against UltraHLE Both FGN Online and Next-Generation Online are reporting that Nintendo is planning on taking legal action against the UltraHLE authors:

"Nintendo is very disturbed that Reality Man and Epsilon have widely distributed a product designed solely to play infringing copies of copyrighted works developed by Nintendo and its third-party licensees. We are taking several measures to further protect and enforce our intellectual property rights which, of course, includes the bringing of legal action. Emulators and Roms are clearly infringing and damage not only 'larger industry players' such as Nintendo but hundreds of smaller companies who invest millions of dollars and thousands of hours to develop and program software only to have it stolen on the Internet."

UltraHLE Authors Respond RealityMan, co-author of the remarkable UltraHLE has sent an e-mail to EMU News Service regarding the recent reports that Nintendo was considering filing legal action against the UltraHLE authors.

"I would like to state that Nintendo have yet to contact us regarding any legal action. I can adamantly state that we, in no way, circumvented any security device as Beth Lewellyn (from Nintendo) has suggested (I don't even know what it is).  We used publicly available information in the creation of this software and only emulated core processor technology."

In light of Nintendo's recent controversial actions and statements, there is growing support for a boycott of Nintendo. If Nintendo does go ahead with a lawsuit, momentum for such a boycott will no doubt gather steam, and could ultimately cost Nintendo more than had they just left well enough alone.

A lawsuit could also be a public relations fiasco. Not only would it be bad business for a company to crack down on its own customers, it would also draw attention to a relatively quiet emulation community. The average video gamer is probably unaware of emulation. A lawsuit would undoubtedly be covered by both the mainstream and video game press - bringing more fans into the emulation fold. Unwittingly, they're at risk of promoting emulation to a much wider audience.

Good luck goes out to RealityMan and Epsilon.

New DANJI Released R. Compig has released a new DANJI beta. Thanks to -ReGNaSTa-, here's an English translation of the documentation:

"2.4 Danji is back with old sound code. (That means lots of bugs)
Memory problems, Noise, unstable sound effects

KOF98 Sound Rom
ren kof98_m1.rom z80.bin
copy /b kof98_v1.rom + kof98_v2.rom + kof98_v3.rom + kof98_v4.rom pcm.bin

Sound programming is not yet complete, so I reverted to old version code for
now. It will take me a little more time to finish... (I still have some bugs to
work out) Please do not delete the original ROM files as there is no way to go back for now. If you really want this buggy version... go ahead."

Again, thanks to -ReGNaSTa- for the news and the translation.

Nintendo Considering Legal Action Against UltraHLE Authors According to recent article featured on TechWeb, Nintendo is looking into filing a lawsuit against Epsilon and RealityMan, authors of UltraHLE. Nintendo spokeswoman, Beth Llewelyn was quoted as saying "Emulators such as this are illegal. They obviously had to circumvent our security chip. It promotes continued piracy." Regardless of whether or not Nintendo would follow through on such legal action, the mere threat of a lawsuit could be a significant deterrent against further development of UltraHLE or other Nintendo 64 emulators. With the recent lawsuit between Sony and Connectix, and now this, the future of emulation may very well be in doubt. Thanks to Ben for the e-mail.

Emulation Legality Rich Lawrence (author of an Atari 800 emulator) has written an excellent essay on the legality of emulation and related issues. If you care about emulation and wish to be educated on this issues involved, this is a great resource.

"I think it's important for the emulator community to understand for themselves the legalities of the situation rather than listening to the equally stretched versions of truth typically presented by either 'side' in the debate."

- Rich Lawrence
Author of Atari800Win

Keep in mind, Rich is not a lawyer, so he's asking that if anyone who has a better understanding of the law to e-mail him with corrections, specifically if they can cite particular precedence cases.

Duddie Leaves PSEmu Team Not too long ago, Tratax announced his resignation from the PSEmu Pro team. Today, there was another casualty. Duddie has decided to leave due to a conflict between continuing the PSEmu Pro project and a future job.

"I'm leaving PSEmu and am starting a new life. Of course I'm not leaving all of you dear emulator fans, and I'm not leaving my friends. I just have to leave PSEmu due to the fact that it will collide with a future job. Speaking of emulation, it became strange in the last days, and it turned into a flame war of ROM beggars, pirates, thieves, etc. Those people can ruin everything, especially since I, as emu author, know how much work it costs. We do things for free, killing our social life, spending every free minute on exploring the meaning of one bit (which sometimes takes hundreds hours). But people don't appreciate this work, and simply don't understand this style of life."

Co-author Kazzuya vows to continue on. Good luck goes out to Duddie in all his future endeavors. Thanks to Jasper for the e-mail.
