Raine 0.18 Released! Even though today is Super Bowl Sunday, Richard Bush still found time to release a brand new version of his multi-arcade game emulator. Raine now supports 26(!) new games, including Legend Of Makaj, Toaplan Snow Bros 2, and Truxton 2 / Tatsujin 2. You can snag a copy from the official homepage or from EMU News Service.

RockNES Lives On Good news. The authors of RockNES have decided not to drop their emulator after all.

"RockNES is not dead. After this short stop, I would like to say I didn't change my mind about a possible illegality. We will continue the RockNES development (me and Kritz). *Any* problem, goodbye emulation, anymore. Thanks for your support."

UltraHLE Discontinued Between UltraHLE, Sony/Connetix and RockNES, it's been pretty crazy in the last few days. And today, it gets even worse: UltraHLE has been officially discontinued. Only two days ago, UltraHLE shocked the world by becoming the first ever playable Nintendo 64 emulator. Now, UltraHLE is no more. Here's the complete text of their announcement:

"The UltraHLE project is discontinued.

"The UltraHLE project was a technical demo, an experiment to see if N64 emulation really is possible and an attempt to advance the state of the art in emulation. It was not designed to be a tool for piracy.

"Once it was released, things moved at an unforeseen pace. In a matter of hours, the main interest for people became acquiring illegal copies of game ROMs. This was why the pages were put down in a matter of hours.

"We do not condone this use of illegal ROMs in any form and do not allow our emulator to be used in this way. As we cannot effectively stop people from using this product in wrong and illegal ways, we have no choice but to discontinue the project.

We also kindly request all sites to remove the UltraHLE package, as has been done here."

Thanks to Shadow64 for the e-mail.

RockNES Authors Mull Cancellation In response to the recent UltraHLE and Sony / Virtual Game Station controversies, the RockNES team is considering dropping their emulator, fearing their work is having the wrong influence on people.

"I don't want to do something 'cool, interesting, just for fun' if this is illegal. I can't see good things around emulation for now (Nintendo and IDSA), so, it seems time to stop... I'm not a hacker, 'warezman' or something... There are *many* info available, hence it's impossible you don't try to write your own video game emulator, it's fun, but illegal (?), you can't (?) and it's enough (?)."

The RockNES authors have not made and final decision. We can only hope and wait...

UltraHLE Site Taken Down Yesterday UltraHLE, a new Nintendo 64 emulator was released. Unlike every other Nintendo 64 emulator that exists, UltraHLE did more than just play simple demos; it plays commercial ROMs. This was a world's first and the authors made no bones about promoting it this way. This led to quite a bit of ROM searching/begging - which shouldn't surprise anyone. However, the authors of UltraHLE apparently were taken aback by this development. They've posted this announcement on their webpage:

"The UltraHLE project was a technical demo, an experiment to see if N64 emulation really is possible. It was not designed to be a tool for piracy.

"Once it was released, things moved at an unforseen pace. A lot of people seemed more interested in acquiring illegal copies of game ROMs, than looking at the technical efforts that went into producing the emulator. We do not condone the use of illegal roms in any form and this emulator was not designed to be used for this. The reaction we saw was not the one we expected. It seems the emulation community is not ready for something like this. The UltraHLE project is now on hold, and will be discontinued if this activity continues. Our aim is to develop emulation technology further, not to hurt Nintendo. Without them none of this would be possible.

"This site is temporarily down and under modifications."

Thanks to the many people who e-mailed.

New N64 Emu Plays Commercial ROMs! A major new emulator has debuted. The world's first Nintendo 64 emulator that actually plays commercial games! Epsilon and RealityMan are the authors behind this masterpiece. Called UltraHLE, this one's for Windows 95.  It requires at least PII 300 and a 3dfx graphics card

"UltraHLE gives PC owners the first chance ever to run commercially available Nintendo 64 games (rom images).  The current aim of UltraHLE is not to run as many games as possible, it is to run some of the best titles as well as possible (e.g. Super Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina of Time etc)."

Vector Dream Dropped In Favor of New Emu Peter Hirschberg sent me an e-mail to announce a few things. It's been a while since the last release of Vector Dream and he's been getting a lot e-mail lately asking him what's up. First, the reason why he's been so quiet lately is that he's been having some unfortunate health problems. He's decided to cancel his Vector Dream emulator and his Marble Madness Emulator. But the good news is that he's hard at work on a new emulator. Read on...

"I've just had major abdominal surgery for some ongoing health problems, so I'm pretty out of it right now. I've been getting a lot of inquiries lately about the status of some of my projects, so here's an update:

  • Vector Dream is dead. I've dropped it completely, and the source code will NOT be given out. Sorry!
  • The Marble Madness Emulator is being dropped. If anyone would like to take over the project, I will send them the source code, minus the Starscream 68000 core (due to it's distribution license). It currently only really needs sound support added and some minor glitches fixed. Let me know if you are seriously interested.
  • Classic Space Wars (clone). Maybe I'll get to this and add sound, but probably not. Who knows.
  • My latest project is called Vectorhead, the sequel to Vector Dream. It is another vector-game-only emulator. It currently runs Asteroids, Star Castle, and Space Wars, all with *complete* sound support. More games could be added by the time I release it, but who knows... The emulator features all my usual vector effects goodies, plus maybe some surprises. The emulator is COMPLETELY vector based, including the GUI! The emulator runs under DirectX. Performance is wonderful, even with all the vector effects. I will probably release the source code (open-source) for this emulator, but I haven't really decided. I really have no idea when I'll have this ready for release. I'm starting a new job in a few weeks, and I've been spending most of my days lately with Mr.Percocet. :-)  It might be a month, or a year.
I will try to keep everyone posted. God bless!"

GrayBox 0.27 Released Arthur Langereis and Allan Jensen have updated their NES emulator to version 0.27:

"Njinn released GrayBox 0.27 ("Classic") for MacOS. This will be the last version we'll make by ourselves. The source is now downloadable and 3rd parties can modify the source and send back any altered files. We'll then build a new version and put it on the site. This is to ensure that only 1 version of GrayBox will be made. 3rd parties may not redistribute the source or any custom binaries. Anyone who sends in changes that make it into new versions will of course get proper credit.

"Also, Arthur Langereis and Allan Jensen teamed up and formed Njinn. Njinn is found on the web at http://www.njinn.com For those who wonder, Njinn is pronounced as Engine. The new graybox home is found on our new site. The old site at spidernet.nl is discontinued."

BrSMS 1.15 Released Ricardo Bittencourt has released a new version of BrSMS to registered users. Here's what's new in version 1.15:

  • Almost perfect border color emulation. Now GG "Fatal Fury Special" has no flicker at all. If you don't like border emulation, then you can use the switch "-noborder" to leave always a black border.
  • Fixed a bug in the "-jap" switch, now you can use it again to enable japanese mode.
  • Support to palette raster effects in Sega Master System games. BrSMS will try to autodetect when the new palette raster engine should be enabled, but you can use the switch "-palraster" to force the new engine. This engine is even slower than the line-by-line engine, so if you have speed troubles, use the "-block" switch. Some games that get better with this engine are SMS "California Games" (in the score), SMS "Space Harrier" (now the sky has correct colors) and SMS "Sonic 1" (transparency effects in "Labyrinth" stage).
  • Improved IRQ engine, now GG "Power Strike 2" and GG "Sonic Spinball" are playable, this also fix the stage four of SMS "Sonic 1".
  • Improved block-based video engine, now some games that previously required the line-by-line engine can be played in the block engine, like GG "Ristar", GG "Sonic Drift 2" and GG "Chakan". This means these games will be A LOT faster.
Also, version 1.14 is now available to the general public. BrSMS is a Sega Master System and Game Gear emulator for DOS.

MacMAME 0.35 Beta 1 Now Out Brad Oliver has released the Macintosh port of MAME version 0.35 Beta 1. Here's what's new:

  • In sync with the DOS version. This new beta introduces lots of internal changes, so don't be alarmed if games which worked flawlessly in 0.34 final are now screwed up. If you see such things, don't forget to mention it on one of the message boards though - we can't check all 1000 games ourselves
  • No new features have been added yet, but several are on deck. The 3dfx code will be incorporated shortly for all those who have asked about it. It is not present in this build.

I can play an audio CD in the background while playing z26 with very little frame-skipping. This wasn't possible before. I don't know if this is a Win98 thing or a z26 thing though."

Bleem Reversal? The Bleem team posted on their webpage today that the public beta released yesterday was, in fact, not a public beta at all:

"It has come to our attention that a STOLEN beta version of our software is circulating the internet -- it was NOT 'leaked' intentionally or otherwise. The STOLEN version was NOT intended for public release -- There are known issues with that month-old version and it will NOT be supported in any way. WebSite, Server, FTP and all other forms of distribution of this STOLEN software are strictly ILLEGAL. We ask that you respect our copyright and our hard work and immediately REMOVE all copies of, and links to, our software."

And also add zip support (although the games are still in plain format, but I'll fix this soon). This new version is 0.61."

Tratax To Leave PSEmu Pro Tratax has confirmed that he will be resigning from the PSEmu Pro development team, effective February 1rst. Tratax has accepted a "very good job offer at a USA based game programming company" and will no longer be able to work on PSemu Pro. For the next few weeks, Tratax will concentrate on trying to improve the current recompiler and fix as many bugs as possible. But once February rolls around, he will leave the PSEmu Pro project. While this is certainly bad news for the PSEmu Pro project, it is good news for Tratax and I know I speak for everybody when I say that we all would like to thank Tratax for the hard work he's put forth into making PlayStation emulation a reality, and that we all wish Tratax the best of luck at his new job.

Connectix Announces PlayStation Emulator! Connectix, makers of the Virtual PC emulator and other commercial software announced today that it will be releasing a new PlayStation emulator for Macintosh (G3) computers! Called the "Virtual Game Station", it's expected to retail for $49.95.

Although the emulation scene has been booming for the last few years, few companies have tried to release commercial emulators. There are exceptions, of course, such as Activision's Atari 2600 emulator and Microsoft's arcade game emulator. But these products have met with limited success.

Today's announcement, however, has sent shock waves through out the Macintosh community. The Macintosh has never had as many games as the PC - either in quantity or quality. Many see this as a chance for the Macintosh to help bridge this gap.

One of the more interesting aspects to today's announcement is the fact that this emulator is not licensed or endorsed by Sony. How Sony intends to react to this news remains to be seen. But perhaps the best news of all is the possibility that Connectix might port their PlayStation emulator to the PC.

http://www.connectix.com/cvgs/

Thanks to the many people who sent in e-mails :)

"Finally, after several months, about 20 inofficial beta sub-versions, about 150 new things, details and fixes, here it is: no$gmb 2.0.

"The possibly most important new feature is Color Gameboy emulation, which I decided to make shareware, unregistered users will get a timeout message after a while. I really have almost no-cash and would need some."

BrSMS 1.14 Released! Ricardo Bittencourt has released version 1.14 of BrSMS. Here's what's new:

  • Added a new line-by-line, which is slower but more accurate. Some new games working in the new engine are SMS "Global Gladiators", SMS "Cool Spot", SMS "Speedball 2", SMS "Xenon 2", SMS "Quartet", SMS "Ghost House", SMS "Gauntlet", GG "Ristar", GG "Robocop 3", GG "Sonic Drift 2" and more!
  • BrSMS always try to autodetect which video engine it should use. However, you can use the new options "-line" to force the new line-by-line engine or "-block" to force the old block-based engine.
  • The Z80 clock was reduced from 3.57MHz to 3.32MHz (this seems to be the correct value). This make the Z80 emulation a bit faster.
  • Support to zoomed sprites, used in GG "X-Men: Gamesmaster's Legacy".
  • Now the PC speaker is turned off when the emulator exits.
  • Tweaked a bit the border color, now GG "Fatal Fury Special" has less flicker.
  • Optimized the VESA 2 modes for MMX processors. Emulation in VESA 2 modes is now twice as fast when MMX is detected.
  • Now BrSMS display a list of known bugs for each game in the startup.
While version 1.14 is for registered registered users only, version 1.13 is now freely available. BrSMS is a Sega Master System and Game Gear emulator for DOS.
