TheSE Updated, Canceled Urban Nilsson and Christian Gyrling have decided to cancel their Super Nintendo emulator. With several excellent Super Nintendo emulators out there (Snes9X, SNEMul and ZSNES), Urban and Christian decided to hang it up. With TheSE officially canceled, they've decided to release one last final version of TheSe:

"We have decided to discontinue TheSE! There isn't much more to do on SNES emulation than SNES9X, ZSNES and SNEMul already have implemented or is about to implement. With the release of the Snes9x source we decided to stop programming TheSE (at least for now). TheSE ver 0.14 was never finished. Therefore we release TheSE ver 0.14 BETA as our last version."

X-Mame 0.33 RC1 Released! Hans De Goede has updated his X-Mame (Unix port) emulator to version 0.33 Release Candidate 1. Here's what's new:

  • All the changes form dos-0.33rc1
  • Automated the porting process a bit, changed contrib/make-makefiles.p not to generate a malloc-lines log. Since this is not necessary anymore. Added contrib/fix-mame.
  • Part of these automation changes it that the objs generated by make-makefiles are now used in makefile.unix by including makefile.core.
  • Due to the above changes also all core-filenames have been made lowercase, finally bringing unity.
  • Changed the compiler hints in README.unix not to use DCC, since that was a bad advice which was causing the malloc trouble in the first place. We still have irix problems when using -n32 which are being looked into. For now use -o32 when compiling.
  • Added support for the m6808 asm CPU core
  • Added 16 bit sound calls support.

"In sync with PC rc 1. Barring any major bugs, this code will be identical to the final 0.33 build. Every crashing bug reported has been fixed. If you crash MacMAME in any way, please let us know. The video code is a little more relaxed on the screen size, so more games will run in 3x mode rather than bumping down to 2x."

New Game for Odyssey2! John Dondzila, author of several Vectrex and ColecoVision games is now tackling a brand new system: the Odyssey2. As you can tell from this sneak-preview screenshot, this new game is inspired by the classic shooter/maze game Berzerk. Tentatively titled AMOK!, the game is nearly done and should be ready in a couple of weeks. John is polishing up the collision detection and will add sound effects as the final touch.

The Odyssey2 was released way back in 1978 by Magnavox and featured an Intel 8048 CPU. And if I'm not mistaken this will be the first new game for the Odyssey2 in 15 years.

Fixo Files - the Atari Special Emulators Unlimited has released not one, not two, but six(!) new interviews - all with Atari emulation (or Atari related) authors. The line up includes:

  • John Saeger (Z26 - Atari 2600)
  • Frederic Gaudouin (Pacifist - Atari ST)
  • Keith Wilkins (Handy - Atari Lynx and Stella DOS port - Atari 2600)
  • Richard Lawrence (Atari800win - Atari 800(XL)/130XL/5200)
Plus, there's Les Caron of the Atari Gaming Headquarters, Don Thomas (World of Atari '98), and a pretty cool looking animated GIF of the Atari logo.

(As an interesting side note, Frederic reveals that he had been working on a Neo Geo emulator (now discontinued) - something that was reported here many months ago  - only he was mentioned merely as an "anonymous" author. I received tons of e-mail from people all trying to guess who the mystery author was. The most popular guess was Sardu (wrong!) - but not one single person had the correct answer...)

Zophar's Domain Hacked Long time readers know that EMU News Service tries to focus on positive news and avoids negative stories. Last week, for example, a major Super Nintendo emulator's webpage was hacked, but we choose not to give free publicity to this sort of stunt. Yesterday, however, Zophar's Domain was hacked. Zophar has issued a public statement and requested that we help spread the word:

"Well, this is just to let all of you know that ZD's not dead. It didn't 'move' and we didn't relocate to a gaysex site (heh). It was hacked. And currently, I have no way of doing anything. Just so you know that it's not dead...and I'm working on figuring out what to do next."

SNEmul 0.82 Released! Archeide and vOx have released a new version of SNEmul! Despite the version number, this is pretty major update. SNEmul is now faster then before, joystick support is better and ADSR/GAIN sound effects are now emulated.

"A lot of bugs fixed and, at least, ADSR/GAIN sound effects implemented ! That means that the sound is better with many games. But it's a bit buggy, so if the sound is worse, you can disable it in the Emulation dialog. The joystick support have been improved : you can now select joypad buttons and select your joypad with the Options dialog (Menu : Joystick #1).

"Nowadays, it seems that everyone want the truth, so if you want to know: yes i have read the SNES9X sources and it helped me a lot. So a big thanks to Jeremy Koot, Gary Handerson, Lestat and all the SNES9X contributors."

MAME Beta 7 for Mac Released! Brad Oliver has release MAME 0.33 Beta 7 today. Here's what's new:

  • In sync with PC beta 7. This will be the last beta for 0.33 so please report any outstanding bugs which haven't been fixed yet, especially crashes.
  • John changed the audit dialogs to be moveable-modal dialogs so you can continue working while the audits are running.
  • There is now a 3x video mode courtesy of Aaron. Although it's a bit slower due to the increased bandwidth, it is especially nice if your screen is set to 1024x768.
  • Apple Design keyboards should now twinkle the LEDs
  • MacMAME now works properly with "merged" ROMs. If you store all related ROM sets in one zip file, make sure you either create an alias to that zip or an empty folder with the missing ROM name so that you'll have an entry to click on in the front-end.
  • MacMAME should clean up better after a crash. I've attempted to make it put the volume, control strip and menubar back to the proper settings when a crash occurs.
The DOS port was released yesterday.

  • Added a new MMX sprite renderer (use the switch "-mmx"). This renderer is 80% faster than the normal one (yes, this means 180% faster than the previous version).
  • Added five new custom Z80 emulators, they are 50% to 300% faster than the default, depending on the game (sometimes even more than that!)
  • Added a preliminary video cache, this made the background renderer 100% faster than before. You can disable the video cache with the switch "-nocache", but so far I didn't found any game with cache problems.
  • TURBO mode is even faster than before (even on a 486sx33 the emulation is faster than a real Master System!)

Sega CD Tech Docs As everyone knows, there are no Sega CD emulators available yet. Christian Schiller of Eidolon´s Inn has been trying to collect technical information of the Sega CD for a while now. Today, he has added two new documents to his site. These documents are the actual US patents for the Sega CD.

"Though these documents are rather non-specific (in terms of giving concrete memory addresses of the various functions), they describe the inner workings of the Sega CD very precisely. I have commented the documents where I think it was necessary or helpful. With these two documents now available, it should be a LOT easier to reverse-engineer some games in order to write an emulator."

New Fusion Demo Released Microsolutions has updated their Macintosh emulator for the PC. Here's what's new in version 1.2:

  • Re-wrote floppy code to handle 720K, 800K, 1.44MB, 1.68MB formats. The 800K format is psuedo-Macintosh... it uses standard PC disk format with 10 sectors per track. The PC hardware is NOT capable of reading/writing real Macintosh 800K disks!
  • Added full verification to floppy formatting.
  • Increased emulation's speed by as much as 30% on non-PII CPUs.
  • Added support for two more 1MB ROMs and one more 512K ROM.
  • Added additional startup sound.
  • Added ability to select between HFS and ISO9660 sessions on a dual format CD.
  • Corrected several CPU/FPU emulation instruction bugs.
  • Added limited MMU support to allow System 7.0.1 to work under all circumstances.

Atari800Win 2.2 Released! Richard Lawrence has released Atari800Win version 2.2. Here's what's new:

  • A disk indicator is drawn at the bottom right hand corner of the display when sector I/O occurs. The small block drawn contains the number of the drive being accessed, and is red for writes, green for reads.
  • 5200 controllers work. F5 is reset, Shift-F5 is coldboot, F4 is the start button. Keyboard 0-9 are equivalent to the 5200 controller 0-9 (you can use the keypad if you aren't using it for a joystick). Keypad * or regular * work as the 5200 * key, and keypad - or regular - work as the "#" key. When  running in 5200 mode with a joystick triggers 2-4 operate as 5200 triggers  2-4, NOT as function shortcuts like in Atari computer mode. WARNING: At present several 5200 carts fail. This will have to be worked on for a while.
  • Found the (atari side) bug that was keeping multiple stick inputs from working. You can now play with at least two sticks; I don't have four to test but that should work as well.
  • ModeX was abandoned in favor of simple linear modes at 320xXXX resolutions.
  • Switched back to DirectDrawSurface revision one interfaces, since it's obvious some cards that claim to be DirectDraw 5 compliant are not, and do not support DirectDrawSurface2 or 3.
  • Shift-ctrl + keycode is sent properly to Atari machine now
  • Fixed a potential Windows crash condition when the Atari crashed
  • Fixed a bug that could cause some cartridge options to not be saved out.
  • DirectDraw mode transitions are a little smoother (one screen size to other)
  • Sound is not restarted on mode changes, but it will still get a little garbled (unavoidable).
  • Various small tweaks and refinements.
Source code is also available. Atari80Win is an Atari 800 computer emulator for Windows.

New SNES9x Released! The SNES9x development team has released 6 new versions of SNES9x!

  • Snes9X for DOS v1.05 (No-GUI version)
  • Snes9X for Linux(i386) v1.05
  • Snes9X for SunOS (Sparc) v1.05
  • Snes9X for Solaris (Sparc) v1.05
  • Snes9X for AcornOS (ARM) v1.04
  • Snes9X for AmigaOS (Amiga) v1.0
Here's what's new in the DOS version:

Version 1.05

  • The master volumn disable code was looking that the wrong variable!
  • Fixed crash bug in newer sound code if a ROM tried to start a sample playing who's data went past the end of SPC700 memory. (Cannon Fodder)
Version 1.04
  • Fixed DSP1 ROM header detection bug.
  • More DSP1 work; still nothing works, although I know the multiply command is correct because I've compared the results against a real DSP1.
Version 1.03
  • Oops, the multi-player 5 disable code change broke the multi-player 5 being the default controller.
  • Implemented the colour window on the main screen - now Zelda's oval zoom window displays correctly and Krusty's Super Fun House clips the left-most 8 pixels as it does on the real SNES.
  • TERRANIGMA didn't like me returning a random value when it attempted to read a channel's the current sample byte.
  • Hacked in initial support for mode 7 priority-per-pixel - the priority bit doesn't actually change the priority of the pixel but the two games that I  know of that use the feature look OK. (Winter Extreme Skiing and the intro of Tiny Toons Adventures).
  • Colour addition/subtraction code now uses RGB565 rather than RGB555 calculations - helps a little with the loss of the bottom bit of SNES colour data.
Version 1.02
  • Switched to adding back drop colour rather than fixed colour when sub-screen addition is enabled but there's nothing on the sub-screen. Uniracers seems to need it. - DISABLED it again. Causes problems for other ROMs and Uniracers itself on later screens.
  • Fixed XOR window logic combination mode and area inversion code, now Uniracers works correctly.
  • Oops, if colour window and half colour addition/subtraction were both switched on, area outside colour window was still being halved, it shouldn't. Hacky fix at the moment until I implement the correct fix.
  • Fixed several bugs with the mosaic effect and 16x16 tiles and a few possible background scroll offset bugs and the mosaic effect.
  • Optimised the sound sample generation code for cases when the SNES sample playback frequency was higher than the sound card playback rate.
  • Fixed possible click sound when a sample was first started to be played.
Not only that, the source code for SNES9x has finally been released!

Atari800Win 2.1 Released! Rich Lawrence has released Atari800Win version 2.1. Here's what's new:

  • The SIO patch option is now configurable on the fly; it doesn't reboot the machine. Besides the hardware dialog you can flip it with F11.
  • Hardware dialog was reworked to display better on ModeX screens. Antic dialog is gone; its contents are on the Hardware dialog now.
  • Now using better artifacting code from Perry (text mode still doesn't work)
  • Volume will not be set on MMsystems that can't handle it (what's up with THAT anyway? Seems to be true for ancient SoundBlasters. Ugh). Volume slider will be disabled on these systems.
  • Fixed SKSTAT handler (could cause missing keystrokes, missed reads of SHIFT)
  • Any nagging sound initialization problems people were having should be fixed
  • Added 48Khz sound output. Most sound cards probably don't support this; and the WaveOut functions can NOT check for this capability ahead of time, so be prepared for it to fail. It really rocks on my SoundBlaster PCI64 though; makes a huge difference for disk access noises and high frequency stuff.
  • Joystick dialog differentiates between "none" and "keypad". Keypad can only be assigned to one port, and should always work. On 101 keyboards the arrow keys WILL work as Atari arrow keys regardless of keypad setting. I'm doing it the pristine MSoft way now; so if it still doesn't work on your keyboard, well, sue Bill Gates or something.
  • Woohoo! Autoduel works! Use 130XE, SIO patch off, and you'll want to have F8 (full speed) most of the time. One of the best games ever out of Origin.
  • Took out the internal Atari UI until it can be reworked. Too fugly with thefirst quicky attempt; and besides it doesn't do anything the Win UI doesn't.
  • Joystick button 2 (if available) flips between full and regular speed (same as keyboard F8). Button 3 pauses/unpauses (keyboard F9). Button 4 flips the SIO patch (keyboard F11). Yes, I will make these configurable later on.
  • Pausing the emulator now shades the screen 50%.
  • Reorganized CPU code for both (slight) speed and size improvement.
  • Fixed SIO bug in drive status (DCOMND 0x53).
Thanks to Cloy for the e-mail.
