Bochs v.1.2.1 for Unix, a PC 80x86 emulator has been released. This release contains the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:

  • more work on makefile for building RPMs
  • [ #432382 ] build debian packages patch add build/debian directory from Rob Lemley which allows us to make Debian packages!
  • optimize for speed when simulating one processor. Now 1-processor performance should be equivalent to 1.1.2.
  • [ #425640 ] sb16 assumes fpos_t is long int This fixes compiles of iodev/sb16.cc on linux systems with newer libraries in which fpos_t is not an integer.
  • [ #432488 ] SMP:assert "n_logfn < MAX_LOGFNS" fails increase MAX_LOGFNS since we ran out of them on an SMP simulation with 4 processors
  • changes to compile clean on cygwin:
    • don't use the WIN32 snprintf define for cygwin
    • add ssize_t definition for cygwin
    • only compile "struct timeval tval" if select is available on that platform.
  • [ #432491 ] SMP: CPUID says no APIC feature clean up inconsistent use of BX_SUPPORT_APIC and BX_APIC_SUPPORT, which caused the CPUID to report no APIC was present
  • [ #431025 ] --enable-external-device-models broken removed configure options for external-device-models and external-cpu-memory. These don't work and aren't going to be fixed.
  • [ #429448 ] configure: -lreadline when not there Now configure allows you to choose not to use readline, even if it's found on your system.
  • [ #428915 ] apply extended keyboard patch extended keyboard patch by Dave Poirier
  • [ #428626 ] if no X11 found, configure&make; fails Now configure halts if X windows is selected but no X libraries are found.
  • updated rombios to version 1.13. This fixes several problems:
    • [ #430472 ] DOS HIMEM "A20 line" error This problem was apparantly caused when Bryce added a function that prints the BIOS version, and he called it too early in the boot process. Now the same function is called later, and it doesn't break the A20.
    • [ #431010 ] SMP structure overwritten in v1.2 SMP structures were getting overwritten by BCC-generated data, preventing SMP operating systems from detecting that other processors were available.
    • [ #431016 ] bios: SMP struct has wrong entry count SMP structure had the wrong entry counts
  • very minor doc updates (typos, replace broken link to mtools info)
  • quit when the user clicks the power button, even if they have disabled panics.
  • win32 now defaults to having mouse capture mode turned off. For new users, it would be distressing for their mouse cursor to disappear until they pressed F12.
  • [ #428222 ] vga font not installed added script called "install-x11-fonts" which should help people install the VGA font on X windows systems, if it isn't already there.

18:35EST - Kawaks v.1.03 for Win 9X Released

Kawaks v.1.03 for Win 9X, a CPS2 Multi-Arcade emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:

1.03: * Rom loading by CRC. First tries to locate a file that has a good CRC32.
          Then, if it fails it tries and load a file according to its name.
          This should get rid of the rom loading problems for those who don't
          want to fix their romsets...
        * Fixed some issues about RomCenter DAT generation. Still not 100%
          correct however.
        * Kileed DX 8 code. Kawaks runs with regular dinput.dll now.
          And DX7 or less maybe.
        * You can back out from fullscreen with ESCAPE.
        * Added OK/Cancel buttons to Load game dialog box.
        * Fixed CPS1 Z80 ROM sizes. Actually saves a little RAM for those games
          too.
        * Much improved sprites/background synchronisation. Remaining glitches
          are likely to be a CPU timing issue.
        * Fixed CPU timing for CPS1 games. They now run smoooooth :)
        * Joypad support ! Until I remake the Refine keys box, you'll have to
          configure your joypad yourself in the games' ini. Flame me.
           Here are the codes to use
            256 = Pad 1 Up
            257 = Pad 1 Down
            258 = Pad 1 Left
            259 = Pad 1 Right
            260 = Pad 1 Button 1
            261 = Pad 1 Button 2
            262 = Pad 1 Button 3
            ...

            512 = Pad 2 Up
            513 = Pad 2 Down
            514 = Pad 2 Left
            515 = Pad 2 Right
            516 = Pad 2 Button 1
            517 = Pad 2 Button 2
            518 = Pad 2 Button 3
            ...
        * Not using font from loaded game anymore for on screen display.
          This build uses a fixed XVSF font for every game.
          This fixes on screen display for CPS1 games, which don't
          have a fixed font like CPS2 games do.
          Also allowed to generate a much more readable palette.
        * Added 1 frame of sprite lag for CPS1 games. Sprites move in sync

23:36EST - Palm OS Emulator v.3.2 for Win 9X, Mac OS, & Unix

Palm OS Emulator v.3.2 for Win 9X, Mac OS, & Unix, a 3Com Palm OS emulator has been released. This release contains the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:

  • (Mac) Carbonized. In order to use the Macintosh version, you need CarbonLib 1.2.5 or later. The latest version is 1.3.1. This change also requires Macintosh OS version 8.6 or later. [Scott Gruby]
  • (Unix) Support psf, ram, rom, device, load_apps, and run_app command line options. [David A. Jablonski]
  • Rewrote LCD-handling code to share a lot of cross-platform code. The major user visible effect of this is that the Unix version now has the white 2-pixel border around it when emulating a device with an SED 1375 or 1376 display, and that the updating on Unix will be faster (especially over a network).
  • Rewrote a lot of the EmDevice routines in order to be more table-driven. Also added ability to configure the CPU object created, and the minimum RAM size that can be configured.
  • Added Visor Edge support. [James Phillips]
  • Rewrote the menu-handling code to share a lot of cross-platform code. Along the way, cleaned up some host-specific aspects of menu handling. Over all:
    • Mac
      • Now has a popup menu that looks like the Windows version (use Ctrl-click to display it).
    • Unix
      • The popup menu on Unix now is laid out the same way as the Windows version. This includes finally having the MRU menus for recent sessions and installable files.
      • Can press Shift-F10 to display the popup menu.
    • Windows
      • Menu items now have Alt shortcut keys. I would have used the more-standard Ctrl, but that's currently used for entering commands into the emulated environment. I would have used the less-standard Ctrl+Shift, but felt that requiring three fingers for a shortcut command was excessive.
      • The menu is popped-up in response to a WM_CONTEXTMENU message now instead of manually looking for F10 presses and right button clicks. This means that (a) the menu is popped up at the *end* of a right-button click instead of the beginning, (b) you need to use Shift-F10 instead of just F10 to popup the menu item, and (c) you can also use the "menu" key on some PC keyboards (the "VK_APPS" key).
    • All
      • Paves the way for dynamically updating menus for different circumstances (for instance, if emulating a particular device requires a menu special for it, that can be added).
      • Hmmm...HostAddMenuCommand, anyone? :-)
  • Sped up the checking for direct access to UI Mgr data structures. The overhead for this option should now be imperceptible.
  • Allow read/write access to font fields in ControlType, ListType, and FormLabelType. [Many]
  • Allow read access to FormType::menuRscId field. [Markus Schmid]
  • Allow complete access to gadgets (since gadget callback functions are given just a pointer to the gadget, but not the Form through which they could make access calls). [Ben Combee]
  • Allow read/write access to "attr" for FormBitmapType before Palm OS 3.2 --
  • FrmHideObject didn't change the usable bit before then. [Steve Achelis]
  • Fix access to WindowType::frame field. This was allowed, but a bug in the calculation of the field's offset invalidated the access. [Stephen Best]
  • For Poser 3.1, access to WindowType fields displayWidthV20, displayHeightV20, displayAddrV20, and bitmapP was documented as "read only". This is now enforced; write access is no longer allowed.
  • For Poser 3.1, access to the FieldType field attr was documented as "read/write" before Palm OS 3.3. This is now enforced.
  • Allow access to WindowType fields even when the WindowType is part of a FormType.
  • It used to be that you could not access those fields if the windowFlags.dialog bit was set.
  • Fixed bug where Poser itself would cause an access violation to parts of a FormType when preparing the error message for a user access violation to the FormType.
  • Poser used to read and cache the size of the system function dispatch table.
  • However, some versions of Palm OS now resize the table, thus invalidating Poser's cached size value. The result is that Poser would sometimes report that system functions are not implemented when they really are. [Mike McCollister]
  • Squelch display of message saying that someone called DbgMessage ("c") and DbgMessage ("Transaction finished"). [Catherine White, Andreas Linke, Mark Peters]
  • Be more robust in HostControl calls that take printf-style var-args parameters.
  • Fix potential bug in code that tries to find the beginning of a function given an address in that function. [Adam Liss]
  • Support Soft, Hard, Debug, and No Extension resets. The Reset menu item now brings up a dialog allowing you to set various reset-related options. The "Reset" button in the "Continue / Debug / Reset" dialog is now "Reset...", and brings up the same dialog. By default, the settings are set to a Soft Reset with Extensions.
  • Fixed problem where device could get into a "flashing" state while running Gremlins, where the device is continually turning on and off. [Stephen Best]
  • Added 4 more slots in Card Options dialog.
  • If the user brings up the Card Options dialog, Poser checks for the existance of the HostFS shared library when exitting the dialog. If the library is not installed, Poser displays a message dialog suggesting that the user download and install it.
  • Make sure the user can't accidentally attempt to install a HotSync User Name from the preferences dialog that's too long. [Steve Achelis]
  • (Unix) Extended "Choose File" dialog to support the choosing of directories. This "Choose Directory" dialog is used when clicking on the "Browse" button in the "Card Options" dialog. Navigate via the file/directory name list, or type the path into the edit box. You can use TAB for name completion, '/' to indicate that you want to enter the directory currently entered in the edit box, and RETURN (or click on the OK button) to select the directory in the edit box.
  • (Unix) Implemented clipboard support. This support has uses in two areas: copying the text from error message boxes (see the next item), and clipboard interchange.
  • Clipboard interchange is where the Palm OS clipboard is kept in sync with the host clipboard. On Unix, this is tricky because of the paradigm Unix uses for the clipboard.
  • But, in short, to copy from the Palm OS to a Unix application, select the text in the Palm OS application, select the Copy menu item in the Palm OS application, go to the Unix application, and middle-click to paste the selection. To copy from a Unix application to a Palm OS application, select the text in the Unix application, go to the
  • Palm OS application, set the insertion point, and select the Paste menu item.
  • (Unix) The error dialog that reports runtime errors in Palm OS applications (e.g., "Bus error", "Low-memory accessed", etc.) now displays the text in a selectable pane. That is, the user can select the text with the mouse. Once this is done, it acts like a selection in any other Unix program, and can be pasted by middle-clicking in the target Unix application.
  • (Unix) All dialogs are now centered on the main screen.
  • Show applications in the "New Gremlin" dialog even if they have the dmHdrAttrHidden bit set. [Scott Johnson]
  • Fixed problem with profiling where any system function that Poser completely implemented (including all HostControl functions) would cause the profiling system to push a record onto an internal stack but not pop it off later, leading to an internal stack overflow.
  • Using a debugger to single-step over a line of source code that performed a "soft" invalid memory access (that is, one that is proscribed by convention, and not, say, one that causes an address error) would queue up the error and not show it until regular execution was resumed. [Adam Dingle]
  • Support -horde_save_dir. This option has been around for a couple of years, but never did anything. It now works as documented. Use it to specify the location for "GremlinStates_*" directories. This parent directory must already exist. If the directory does not exist or is not specified, the "GremlinStates_*" directories will be created in the Emulator directory as before.
  • When resetting a session or creating a new one, reset the Gremlin state so that the
  • Suspend and Resume menu items are no longer enabled.

15:25EST - Bochs v.1.2 for Unix Released

Bochs v.1.2 for Unix, a PC 80x86 emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:.

  • This version is the first feature release from the Bochs project on Sourceforge. The following list describes the changes since 1.2.pre1.
  • [ #427259 ] rombios HALT calls don't print Fixed bios/rombios.c HALT macro so that it writes the line number of the panic to the PANIC_PORT (port 0x400) and then does NOT do a halt instruction. Also changed iodev/unmapped.cc so that the line number written to PANIC_PORT is displayed as a BX_PANIC message. Because the HALT macro now triggers the normal panic behavior, it can be controlled by the bochsrc.
  • [ #429016 ] crash if no hard drive rombios used to call HALT macro if no hard drive was found. Now it only calls HALT if a hard drive has an illegal geometry.
  • [ #425388 ] include source for simple disk img tool
  • [ #428478 ] mkimg tool creates image 1 byte too big Added bximage tool, which makes empty floppy and hard disk images. It is now included in the top level Makefile, so it will get built by default on all platforms.
  • [ #426036 ] eth_fbsd.cc compile problem on solaris26 added configure test so that "configure --enable-ne2000" only includes the Berkeley Packet Filter code (eth_fbsd) if the header file can be found. If you don't have BPF the ne2000 will not actually move packets, but at least it will compile clean now.
  • [ #428214 ] 1.2.pre1 need documentation for binaries Write windows and linux specific documentation to be installed in binary releases.
  • [ #429258 ] disable RESET for version 1.2 Since soft reset was not completely working, I reverted the reset patch. Now it does panics on reset instead of trying to reboot, as the old bochs versions did.
  • [ #428222 ] Should the linux RPM install vga font? now font/vga.pcf will be installed in the RPM package
  • [ #429020 ] stop renaming the BIOS!!! new BIOS changes are now in BIOS-bochs-latest, instead of a BIOS whose name changes every time we change anything! To help distinguish different BIOS versions, the BIOS now prints its RCS Id into the log file.
  • [ #428625 ] compile problem if SHOW_IPS is on removed extra paren that broke SHOW_IPS
  • [ #428219 ] PCI doesn't compile with SMF=1
  • [ #429375 ] pthreads detection broken
  • [ #429073 ] configure: if no X11, makes bad config
  • [ #429229 ] install current .bochsrc in binary rels install Tim's man pages on linux RPM BIOS prints messages in log in case of boot failure rewrote instructions for compiling in win32 (win32.txt) fixed link in HTML changelog.html to point to the real sources on SF. added missing LOG_THIS definition to gui/nogui.cc and gui/rfb.cc added additional check for null pointer in debugger exit routine added diskd to .bochsrc

15:20EST - Solace v.2.3 for Win 9X Released

Solace v.2.3 for Win 9X, an Processor Technology Sol-20 emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:.

-- New Features --

 * At the request of Paul Schaper, I added these three debugger commands,
   based on similar commands from NSDOS' debugger: MM CM SM

 * Typing normal text while the input focus is on the tape player
   dialog will redirect the keystroke to the main window and will
   shift focus there as well. (idea from Dudley Henderson)

 * A defeaturing, actually. Solace used to force the numlock state
   to TRUE when the main window caught focus, and then it would return
   numlock state back to whatever it was when focus was lost unless
   the user had actually changed the numlock state in between. The
   option to have this behavior is still in the code, but it is
   compiled out by the setting of the DIDDLE_NUMLOCK var defined in
   solace.h. It didn't work on NT anyway; diddling numlock must be
   different on that platform.

 * Added a new feature to the tape dialog: optionally there is a
   checkbox that allows a user to force the tape motor enable input
   to the recorder. Oftentimes a user would like to rewind, play,
   or fast forward a tape yet the Sol is busy running some program.
   Normally the user would have to quit/suspend the program, do
   some tape command like CAT to energize the tape motor enable
   relay, then forward or rewind the tape, then go back to the
   application. Instead, some users either pulled the motor
   "remote" wire out, or they added a switch to force the motor
   enable. Thus, while that progrm was running on the Sol, if they
   wanted to rewind they just throw the switch, rewind, then turn
   the switch off. (Requested by Dudley Henderson)

   To enable this option, go to the "Options/Tape" tab and select
   the "Allow Forcing Motor Enable" checkbox.

 * Added a couple of scripting features, at the suggestion of Paul
   Schaper.

   There is now a "File/Run Script..." menu item on the main window.
   A filename is given and then simulated Sol keyboard input comes
   from the specified file. Files can be nested three deep; a new
   file is invoked by having a line in the following format:
         \
   However, there should be no leading spaces on the \<....
   Each end of line automatically generates a simulated RETURN key
   stroke. Files can also have "metakeys" that can be one of the
   following strings on the left, with the corresponding keystroke
   value on the right:
        \     (0x0A)
        \     (0x0D)
        \    (0x7F)
        \   (0x80)
        \   (0x81)
        \  (0x8B)
        \   (0x8C)
        \   (0x8E)
        \  (0x93)
        \     (0x97)
        \   (0x9A)
   Finally, a specific keycode can be specifed in hex. Eg:
        \3D       (=)
        \5C       (\)
        \7F       (DEL)

   The debugger has a script interface that is invoked by
   typing the command
        include filename.scr
   where "filename.scr" is the name of the actual script
   to be read in. Nesting is also three deep here and is
   invoked by including a line of the form:
         \
   Unlike the scripting facility of the main program, the
   debugger scripting does not interpret metakeys.

   NOTE: SOLOS and other programs often poll the keyboard
         while they are performing output to the screen;
         they may be looking for the MODE key or CTRL-C or
         a press of the space bar. At any rate, this will
         characters from any script that is running unless
         something is done about it. The script facility
         in Solace has the following heuristic to try and
         prevent this. It isn't perfect, but it is better
         than nothing.

         Any time the script produces a carriage return,
         a timer is set for 100 ms to suppress any further
         script interpretation until the timer times out.
         If any of the memory mapped locations are written
         to, indicating output from the program, the timer
         is reset back to 100 ms. This works OK for the
         most part, but it isn't perfect. If you have a
         better idea, let me know about it.

-- Bug Fixes --

 * The SVT file format presumed that all filenames would consist only
   of printable ASCII characters, zero padded if less than five chars
   long. This isn't necessarily so. The file name now has an
   escape mechanism for specifying odd names. The escape is the
   backslash (\) character, followed by two hex digits. If the real
   filename contains a backslash, it should be represented by "\5C".
   If a name is less than five characters long, it will be padded out
   with 00 bytes (which is what SOLOS does on the command line). If
   you need space padding, say on filename "ABC", do it like this:

        H ABC\20\20 42 0100 0100 0100

   otherwise it will be assumed to be ABC\00\00.

 * When an SVT is read into memory off of disk, if there is an error
   in the file format, Solace will not indicate the line in error.
   Before, it simply said that something was wrong with the file with
   no indication as to where.

 * If the write protect tab of a virtual tape was changed but nothing
   else was modified on the tape, Solace didn't consider the tape
   "dirty" and thus wouldn't prompt the user to save the change on exit.

 * Dip switch 1 and 4 have only six switches; Solace used to have
   eight switches there, although switch 7 and 8 were n/c's.

 * If the display was scrolled while the bottom of the display was
   offscreen, the scroll would mess up.

 * If both tape drives motor were enabled, odd things could happen.
   The emulation still isn't perfect, but better than it was. For
   instance, if you do a CAT and both tapes are playing, in real life
   noting intelligible would result, but in solace one or the other
   will be read.

   Doing things with both motors enabled isn't heavily tested.
   Don't push your luck.

-- Unimplemented Features --

    1) the serial port interface
    2) the parallel port interface
    3) S-100 interface (disk controller is main object)

WinUAE v.0.1.16 Release 4 for Win 9X, a Commodore Amiga emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:.

  • Virtual Pad: Casio devices were drawing the game image over the virtual pad. Please test to see if this corrects it.
  • HP Buttons: Buttons wouldn't map on some HPs. Please test.
  • Noise Channel: I made the noise channel quieter in GB and SMS/GG. Maybe this will sound a little better.

  • Dynamic Recompiler!!! As far as I know, unique for an 8-bit computer. For most games this means a whopping 25% to 50% speed increase! ^_^
  • Accidentally left in some debug-code in v0.6, it was PUSHing and POPing all Z80 registers every drawn frame!
  • Manual update, some fixes/additions. Read it :)
  • Sped up PUSH AF opcode, making it dynarec compatible as well.
