PSEmu Progress Report Tratax who is now the sole author of PSEmu has updated his webpage with the latest information on the status of his Playstation emulator. First, he confirms that there will be no more DOS versions - only 32-bit Windows releases. Second, the Windows-only release of PSEmu (now called PSEmu Pro) is progressing along. A non-public beta should be out sometime in July with a public release hopefully in August:

"... I do expect a beta release to all beta testers around the end of July. A public version should be out in August.

"This version will be released with a Direct3D driver for graphics emulation, and possibly a 3dfx GLIDE driver. In this age of 3D accelerator cards, it is a waste to use *any* CPU power for graphics rendering. The CPU already has enough to do with R3000 and GTE emulation.

"For playable PSX emulation, get yourself a good graphics card (Voodoo1, Voodoo2, Riva128, i740 or any of the new accelerator cards should do) and a Pentium 2 or K6-2."

For the complete announcement, click here.

VPCE/Unix ver 0.3d Released! Osamu Kurati has released a new version of his Unix port of Virtual PC Engine, a TurboGrafx 16 (aka PC Engine) emulator. This new release adds IPS patch support.

Atari800Win, CAGE, Dtmnt, JFF, NeoRAGE Updated!

TG16 Debugger Debuts Jam Sponge, author of HU6280, has just released a new TurboGrafx 16/PC Engine debugger. Features include:

  • Single stepping
  • Frame stepping
  • VRAM/RAM dumping
  • Breakpoints
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Maze/3135/index.html

Atari800Win ver 2.0 Released! Rich Lawrence has just released Atari800Win version 2.0. This is a major release. Here's what's new:
  • Seven Cities of Gold works fine now
  • Built with MFC dynamically linked instead of statically. This makes the exe much smaller.
  • Last directory for disk images is remembered even when using ctrl-F1, ctrl-F2, etc. Drives selected with ctrl-F? are saved in registry.
  • Keyboard joystick can be configured to automatically release when key is released. This setting is saved between sessions.
  • Using relative pathnames for OS images will no longer confuse dialogs
  • Bad ROM paths/names will show a specific dialog about the failed file and will not cause two boot failures in a row.
  • Remaining inconsistencies in graphics/hardware dialogs are gone, and the behavior of the graphics dialog is slightly different to be less confusing
  • Failure to boot (bad ROMs) several times in a row won't get Atari800Win stuck at a black screen, or leave the hardware dialog up.
  • If individual registry keys are missing/corrupt, they will be replaced with reasonable defaults so booting proceeds normally next time.
  • Fixed a problem that could cause the small dialogs used for graphics selection in 320xXXX modes to not actually switch until Alt-Enter was hit.
  • Windowed modes now clip the extraneous overscan area like other versions
  • 2X stretched non-directdraw window modes are now much faster, but unless you have an AGP graphics card, will almost certainly cause your sound to break up.
  • Window/Full screen state changes with alt-enter are saved to registry
  • All strings moved into the string table. This means Atari800Win should now be VERY easy to translate to other languages.
  • The "dont show" flag works for the joystick dialog.
  • Added a "Clear all settings" menu entry under the "Misc" menu. Basically resets everything to first-run defaults.
  • Fiddled around reducing code size, got it below 200K with dynamic MFC.
  • Fixed annoying DirectInput acquire bug
  • Added support for four joysticks (but not tested)
  • When saving the sound to a file, it is now automatically saved in WAV format (audio format is PCM, 8bit/mono, at whatever the sample rate is).
  • Further refined the joystick read routines to avoid 8-bit programs that are pounding on the joystick ports with reads
  • Fixed a bug that occurred when setting the sound volume to 100%
  • The DirectDraw object is released when transiting modes, so if you start full screen, then go to GDI window, you can run another DirectDraw app without conflicts.
  • Bad screen dimensions fixed when going from DirectDraw stretched window to a full screen mode via Alt-Enter
  • Fixe timer bug; also decreased the frequency of refresh for the speed % window, and put it back to an integer percentage.
  • Changed the way screen refresh works when skipping some updates, so that Atari800Win doesn't suffer any loss of emulation accuracy when skipping frames.
Thanks to atlan for the e-mail.

GBE Progress Report Jim Geffre has just made an announcement on his Gameboy emulator (for DOS). Things are going well. A number of bugs have been squashed and he has rewritten the interrupt and timing routines. GBE now runs more games than ever and a new release should be out within the next couple weeks or so:

"For the past few days, I've been working on improving the compatibility of GBE. As it turned out, version 0.30 was full of bugs due to changes in the CPU emulation code. However, I've managed to fix most of those bugs, and coupled with new interrupt and timing code, I've reached a higher level of compatibility than ever before. In fact, from the games I've tested, I believe it compares favorably with any other Gameboy emulator. If anyone is willing to due bug testing on large quantities of GB games, don't hesitate to send me an email and I will send the most recent beta version of GBE.

"I now plan on fixing a few bugs in the SGB code, and after that, will work on expanding the SGB support. I hope to complete SGB emulation within two weeks and release a new version at that point."

- Jim Geffre
Author of GBE

Ten(!) new emulators were released yesterday. Please read all the news articles so you don't miss anything.

TrueReality Mac Port Begun Niki Waibel's TrueReality is being ported to the Macintosh. This emulator is in the very early stages of development. Only the CPU is emulated, so no games play (or even load) at this point. If you're interested, you can download it from:

TrueReality is a Nintendo 64 emulator for Unix.

Arcade Links Page Updated The arcade links page has been updated by a new maintainer, XiP. Scott (the last arcade page maintainer) has been officially relieved of his duties.

MacMAME ver 0.33 Beta 6 Is Out! Brad Oliver has release MacMAME 0.33 beta 6! This release bring the Macintosh port in sync with the DOS version, plus:

  • Fixed a bug in the PPC 68000 core which caused Alien Syndrome and Sega Tetris to never start up.
  • Games which can use 16-bit color depths are forced to use them. This is a temporary change, probably for this release only. The net effect is that these games will appear slower if you have the "Use 16-bit color" checkbox unchecked.

Breakpoint Leaves Project UnReality Startling news from the Project UnReality camp: effective immediately, Breakpoint (the main author of Project UnReality) has quit working on his Nintendo 64 emulator. Mike got a new job as a Nintendo 64 game developer (good for him) but he must drop his emulator as a result (bad for us). This leaves the entire Project UnReality project in doubt. Whether or not co-author Brian Gordon will continue it is not known at this time.

Here's Mike's complete announcement:

"Is it time to start Project UnReality back up?  Well, no, not exactly. In fact, I have to stop work on it.  To sum it up, I've been offered a position by a company (which will go unnamed) to develop games. Since this company develops games for the Nintendo 64, it is in my offer letter to terminate work on Project UnReality since I will have access to proprietary information.  Feasibly, I could continue work on it up till the date-of-hire, but it's better if I just stop now.

"I now leave Project UnReality in the hands of Brian Gordon... what he plans to do with it, I don't know.  He doesn't have an email address, so don't try to get a hold of him.  I'm sure he'll inform me of his plans when he decides on them, so I'll post the news here once I hear it.  On another note, I have removed my email address as well, since it's kind-of pointless to continue to answer emails after I've stopped.

"Since I also have to leave BlackBag (and this site is provided at the grace of datawiz), I don't foresee it being around much longer.  But maybe datawiz won't mind keeping it here long enough for me to get the news out to everyone...

"That's it for now... again, I'll post the news about Project UnReality's future once I know about it."

- Mike Tedder (Breakpoint)
Former Author of Project UnReality

Good luck and best wishes go out to Mike with his new job and all his future endeavors.

Thanks to Brandon G. for the e-mail.

Big News Day! New MAME, NeoRAGE, TMNT, SNES9x, PC Atari and more!

The Latest On Retrocade The Retrocade page has been updated with the latest news on Retrocade. Things are going well and there could be a public release in as little as 2 weeks, although more likely it will take 3-4 weeks. Many bugs have been fixed and they're now concentrating on the GUI.

Here's the full text of their announcement:

"We've been in beta now since June 1st, and are now at beta 5. All of the major crash & burn bugs are gone, and Retrocade is getting REALLY solid. We now have emulated speech in Sinistar (thanks to Zonn Moore), have made some massive speed improvements over our prior beta releases, and generally cleaned things up and made them much more efficient. Our preliminary GUI makes its debut in beta 5.

"The GUI needs to be completed before Retrocade can be released. It contains all of the game selection, favorites selection, game/dip switch settings, and controller configuration screens, and can't be released until that's finished and all the bugs are out of it. A release could come as early as 2 weeks from now, but more realistically will take another 3-4 to get things ship-shape and ready for release."

ENS Personnel Change Drew Brennecke has been replaced by Lex Wenberg as the Console Links Page Maintainer. This move was necessitated by the fact that Drew hadn't updated his page in over two months and did not respond to any of our e-mails.

This was Drew's second stint with EMU News Service. He first joined us last year and was instrumental in helping us organize our Arcade, Computer and Console Links pages. Drew left to focus more on school and then returned when an opening popped up for the Console Links Page Maintainer. We at EMU News Service wish him the best of luck in all his future endeavors.

Important System 16 News There's a few things to report here. First the good news. System 16 now supports Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars and support for Euro League is also being worked on. Now for the bad news. Thierry Lescot is quitting the project and the System 16 webpage will be closing down. Li Jih Hwa might continue with the DOS port, but for now, we don't know for sure. Either way, the Windows 95 port (not yet released) will continue on.

Here's the full text of Thierry's announcement:

"It's the last update of these pages, this site will be down soon, I leave the project for ever. I hope Nao will continue a DOS port but it's not sure. The Windows 95 version continues and will contains the announced games but I don't know when it will be released! Bye and thanks to all users that supported me and my efforts!"

Finally, you can check out screenshots of System 16 playing Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars:

The source will also be released within two weeks from now (11-06-1998). The Windows version isn't ready yet, I haven't been swimming in the free time, so I just haven't had time to work on it."

Busy News Day! SNEmul and KGen 98 updated! Brand new Gameboy, Nintendo 64, Sinclair QL and Sony Playstation emulators debut! Front end news and more...

Q-emuLator for Windows 95 Debuts! Yes, another brand new emulator is released today. This time it's a Sinclair QL computer emulator. Written by Daniele Terdina, Q-emuLator is partly based on the Macintosh program of the same name. Here's an excerpt from Daniele's announcement:

"Q-emuLator emulates the QL's 68008 processor, the QL's hardware (video, keyboard, sound, serial ports) and many QL add-ons (floppy disks, hard disk, more memory, support for non Sinclair ROMs, RAM disk, mouse, parallel ports) ... Q-emuLator can read and write to QL floppy disks, or access files on the Windows hard disk."

New KGen 98 Released! Steve Snake has just released a brand new version of KGen 98, his Sega Genesis emulator for DOS! Directly from the documentation, here's what's new in version 0.4 Beta:

  • Various compatibility issues have been fixed. Surging Aura, MazinSaga, Dashin' Desperadoes now work correctly, to name but three.
  • Improved ScanLines support. (VESA 2.0 ONLY). Should work on more video cards. Use at your own risk.
  • Altered EUROPEAN mode. Previous versions only had full European support when in 50Hz mode. Note that music / sampled sounds will sound faster - This is due to emulating 1/50th Sec. of European Genesis in 1/60th Sec ! But this will fix the European games that only worked in 50Hz mode.
  • Stopped LEFT & RIGHT or UP & DOWN being pressed at the same time. This can happen on a real Genesis with a worn pad, and programmers are SUPPOSED to make sure it won't affect their games.... But some people don't listen, apparently.
  • Improved the File Requester Keyboard Shortcuts. You can now type a few letters within a short space of time, and it will jump to the first file starting with those letters. The current search string is displayed at the top of the file requester. Also, pressing SHIFT and a letter will jump directly to the Disk Drive of the same letter.
  • Added 16-Bit Video Mode. (VESA 2.0 ONLY). This was ported from the now defunct KGen-X, and has been considerably rewritten to cope with the new Raster FX System. It is slower than the 8-Bit mode, but allows games that try to do more Palette Raster FX than the 8-Bit mode can cope with to function properly. Note that there are a few things left to do in this mode - for example, you cannot  currently save a ScreenShot when you are in 16-Bit mode, and the only Joypad modes that work in this mode are SLOW and SIDEWINDER.
  • Various small changes to the GUI.
  • Various cosmetic fixes.

Virtual Boy Technical Information Site Ben Haynor (author of MetaLynx) has set up a site dedicated to providing technical
information about the Nintendo Virtual Boy game system.

"Thus far, it covers most of the elements of the Virtual Boy's display processing, minus hardware registers and memory maps.  I'm hoping that by exposing this site to the emulation community, more information will come to the surface."

You can check it out at:

Duddie Quits Emulation Duddie, author of PSEmu, has just announced that he is quitting the emulation scene. Duddie wasn't specific, but he cited work-related reasons as the reason for his decision. The good news is that PSEmu has not been discontinued. Co-author Tratax will continue on with the project.

Here's part of the e-mail Duddie sent:

"Due to my new contract (that is strictly confidential) I cannot code PSEmu any longer. But do not be afraid, PSEmu Pro is coded by Tratax with little help from me, so there will be Windows version that many of you expect so nervously. So... any questions, regarding PSEmu should be directly posted to Tratax. Do not bother me with mails like: "Oh G, do not do that!!" or something like that. However my mbox will be removed today! :)"
