13:12EST - MEKA v.0.57 for Win 9X Released

MEKA v.0.57 for Win 9X, a Multi-Platform emulator has been released to registered users. This release contains the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:

    Win 9X
  • Rewrote dynamic palette handler, minimizing actual hardware palette changes, reducing snow and generally reducing flickering when games were abusing of palette changes (like the "Happy Birthday" demo, or some Game Gear games). Due to that change, Palette and Tile viewers are now slighty slower than before, but since they are not used for playing, it is fine.
  • Rewrote hardware sprites collision emulation a more accurate way, fixing Cheese Catastrophe (SMS) bonus catching. There was an easy way to get it to work, but technically speaking, it was not the right one. Instead I emulated the feature a better way so that theorically, any tricky uses of it should be working. Speed might have dropped of about 1 FPS on slow computers. (Thanks to nop.nop for the bug report.)
  • Added data dumping facilities for developers and hackers.
  • You can now dump the following to a file:
    • RAM (raw or text hex/ascii)
    • VRAM (raw or text hex/ascii)
    • Palette (raw or text colors definitions)
    • Sprites (raw or text sprites definition)
    • VDP Regs (raw or text binary/hex)
    • OnBoard Memory (raw or text hew/ascii)
  • Those functionnalities are available by starting MEKA with /DEBUG.
  • Added Sega Keyboard (SK-1100) hardware detection emulation. You can know use the emulated keyboard to play SG-1000 (and early SMS) games supporting it.
  • Added a 'none' value for joypad driver, to disable any kind of detection (as it may be slow on some computers). See MEKA.INP.
  • Battery backed RAM optional pages are now not saved when their content is null.
  • Optimized the technical information viewer that was previously too slow. Also made cosmetic changes to the informations shown.
  • Fixed error message that said MEKA was unable to write SaveRAM to write, while it did correctly.
  • Fixed savestate loading bug in some very specific cases when using a custom mapper.
  • Fixed sprite drawing in overscan video mode.
  • The selected tile in the tile viewer is now refreshed if modified.
  • Fixed PSG volume bug, where volumes 14 and 15 were actually the same. (thanks to Martin Konrad for noticing it)
  • Changed the 'palette_bright' option to a 'palette' option that can be either 'muted' or 'bright', the later being now the default, since many people suggested that it was better than the old default one. Also added a switch in the GUI options box to change it dynamically.
  • VSync is now automatically avoided if a speed faster than 70 hz is being used. So you can use a blitter with VSync enabled and still profit of accelerations if you want them sometimes (skip intros, etc..).
  • Partially rewrote popup menu code. Also hacked a bit to fixed the bug when more than 32 themes were enabled on the same time.
  • Added the usual amount of new themes and new database entries.
  • Added some new comments to the configuration file.
  • Converted all ASM code to NASM format, for better portability.
  • Ported MEKA to Windows. Cool.
Follow the link for MEKA in the Multi-Platform Emulation section.

    Win 9X
  • Rewrote window resizing code. The window will now resize itself to a multiple of the NES' screen dimensions nearest to the user selected dimensions.
  • Added an option to use buttons instead of axes on physical joysticks for the emulated D-Pad. This is useful for some digital joysticks.
  • Fixed a bug that would cause FCE Ultra to crash if sound were disabled during emulation.
  • Added the ability to "fast forward" emulation(use the tilde/grave key).
  • Added an option to allow more than 8 sprites per scanline to be displayed.
  • Added an option to save all extra non-volatile game data (such as battery-backed RAM) in a directory under FCE Ultra's base directory(as opposed to the directory the game is located in).
  • Added an option to allow the emulator to change to a full screen video mode once a new game is loaded.
  • Rewrote pieces of DirectInput joystick handling code. Hopefully it should increase compatibility.
  • Added the ability to automatically obtain button numbers when configuring joysticks, by pressing buttons on the joystick.
  • Added the ability to close the current game(decreases CPU usage).
  • Increased the speed of various function calls by passing arguments to functions through registers instead of through the stack.
  • Added emulation of the MMC5's raw PCM register.
  • Added the ability to save/load save states while network play is occuring.
  • Having PAL emulation enabled will no longer override the NTSC/PAL settings in NSF headers.
  • Fixed a bug that got into the .54 release. Extraneous data was being returned on reads from $2002, which caused problems with some games(such as "Choujin Sentai Jetman").
    Linux port:
  • Added the ability to "fast forward" emulation(use the tilde/grave key).
  • Added command line options "-no8lim" and "-subase".
  • Increased the speed of various function calls by passing arguments to functions through registers instead of through the stack.

12:51EST - Bochs v.1.2 Pre-release 1 for Linux Released

Bochs v.1.2 Pre-release 1 for Linux, a PC 80x86 emulator has been released. This release contains the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:

  • major cleanup of .bochsrc
  • major cleanup of stderr output: prints bochs version information when starting, and at the end it tries to print the message that caused bochs to quit.
  • two hard disk support (diskd). At present, you cannot have two hard drives and a cdrom at the same time, because there is only one IDE controller with two channels.
  • split hard disk support allows different partitions to be stored in different image files
  • two new GUI choices: term mode and RFB mode. Term is a text-only interface, and RFB creates a server that can be accessed using the AT&T; VNC viewer.
  • now Bochs can simulate an SMP machine, if you configure with --enable-processors=N. Configuring more than one processor has a major performance impact, so the default is 1 processor. See SMP documentation for more details.
  • to make SMP work, bx_mem and bx_cpu have been replaced with bx_mem_array[] and bx_cpu_array[]. The cpus are referenced through the BX_CPU(n) macro and memories through the BX_MEM(n). Normal mode has one cpu and one memory, SMP mode has multiple cpu's and one memory, cosimulation mode has multiple cpus and multiple memories.
  • use --enable-cpu-level=6 to make Bochs claim to be a Pentium Pro. The only feature that requires CPU level 6 is apic support.
  • new logging system by Todd Fries, which has 4 levels of event severity (panic, error, info, debug). There are new .bochsrc options that control what action to take when a panic/error/info/debug event occurs.
  • now searches for .bochsrc, bochsrc, bochsrc.txt, and (on unix only) $HOME/.bochsrc.
  • use GNU readline library if --enable-debugger is on, as long as readline can be found on the machine
  • configure checks for existence strtoull and strtouq. if neither exists, Bochs uses its own implementation
  • applied patches from Cliff Hones to fix up the rombios. This includes many improvements, which you can list by doing "cvs log -r 1.6 bios/rombios.c" or looking at cvsweb.
  • added suggested geometries of larger disks to the documentation
  • this is the first release to have official binary packages for win32 and Linux. There is a new "make rpm" in the top-level Makefile which will create an RPM of the current bochs directory. To use this, become root and type "configure; make rpm".
  • applied some FreeBSD patches from Maxim Sobolev (cdrom and serial).

18:12EST - AIAB Release 10 for Win 9X Released

AIAB Release 10 for Win 9X, a Commodore Amiga emulator has been released. This release contains the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes

AIAB Release Notes (version r10a) 19/05/01
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~			~~~~~~~~~~~~~~			   	     ~~~~~~~~
Note that AIABr9 never actually existed.  I reckon this release is pretty much as good as its
even going to get (without exceeding a 4mb download), so bumped up the version number twice ;)
Heres a great list of everything thats new in this release, starting with the coolest:
ADDED:	 [drum role] GlowIcons 'support'!  Whahey, thats right folks, you can now choose the
~~~~~	 look of the icons used by AIAB, and swap between the two easily!  Aside from choosing
	 which iconset to use when AIAB is first run, its also possible to change the iconset
	 at any time, by using the entry in Settings-->Presets in the AIAB Start-Menu - cool,
	 huh? Big thanks go out to Pzyco and Sanny who painted these superb looking GlowIcons.
	 Check out http://mitglied.tripod.de/IconDesigner/ for more of the same!

	 NB: The script that switched between the two iconsets isnt very clever just yet.
	 ~~ It will not perform any checks or do anything clever - it just overwrites the
	      icons that AIAB uses, *thats all*. Back-up your stuff if you're really afraid!

	 UPDATE: Now, if any of the *supported* "AIAB Application" upgrades are installed,
	 ~~~~~~	  (e.g. Music/Internet) the script will update these icons too - whahey!
ADDED:	 Several mouse-pointer presets to the 'SYS:Prefs/Presets/' folder, and added an entry
~~~~~	 to the AIAB Start-Menu to open the 'Pointers' folder with a single click!  To change
	 the look of the mouse-pointer (and save it), just double-click the relevant icon.

	 NB: Erm...I've kind of had to include the 'Pointer' preferences tool (from Amiga
	 ~~ INC.) to achieve this. Does this count as piracy? I dunno, but least I'm
	      'big enough' to point out that Im using the program, rather than just slipping
	      it in, unannounced.

	 Oh, and I've also changed the look of the default AIAB pointer - hope you like it!

UPDATED: InstallerNG. It would seem that after a stagnant period, Jens Trger has resumed
~~~~~~~  this adventurous project, and as ever the stability of this program continues to
         improve.  This version is still a 1.5 pre-release, but is dated 8/4/01.
	 NB:  The MUI 'gui.library' has been renamed to prevent it from being loaded.  This
	 ~~   seems to improve stability/compatibility, but means the GUI doesnt look as nice.
UPDATED: The MuiMaster.library, to a supposedly faster '020 optimised' version, by RedSkull
~~~~~~~  of DC. It didnt feel *much* faster for me (it certainly wasnt any slower), but that
	 might be because Im so used to the speed of JIT ;) Either way it gets included here.

DITCHED: The '2000' from the title. This was 'sooooo Millenium', and I thought '2001' just
~~~~~~~  sounded even cheesier.
UPDATED: The Scalos/Workbench popupmenus a bit.  The useless 'Quit' option has been replaced
~~~~~~~  by 'Shut Down', which displays a requestor asking whether or not the user wishes to
	 'Shut Down' or 'Reboot' - just like the one in the AIAB Start-Menu.

MOVED: The folder containing background images to 'SYS:Prefs/Patterns' which is a more
~~~~~	 standardised path (rather than my 'ColourfullBackgrounds' folder in 'Prefs/Presets').
MOVED:   All the cheap'n'nasty setup scripts executed when AIAB is loaded for the first time
~~~~~    to S:AIAB-Setup - mainly, 'cos its tidier ;)

ADDED: WarpJPEG datatype, by old Amiga stalwart, Oliver Roberts (also of F1GPed fame...).
~~~~~ 	 replacing the older akJFIF one (see below ).  Big thanks to Oliver for letting me use
	 his software here.  For those interested, WarpPNG and (soon) WarpBMP datatypes are
	 also available, so if you wish to add more fileformats to Multiview, give them a try.
REMOVED: The very old JPEG datatype.  I was a bit sick of the akJFIF one, sure its nicely
~~~~~~~  coded, and quite fast, but wasnt free (hence I was using an old version without a
	 nag requestor) - why pay for something as basic as displaying a JPEG?

UPDATED: Information in the 'AmigaForever-readme.txt' file, regarding getting AIAB to work
~~~~~~~  with an AmigaForever setup.  Thanks to Gordon Bland, let me know if this works!
UPDATED: DirectoryOpus 4.15.  Numerous tweaks and bugfixes since the last release.  Take a
~~~~~~~  look at the History.txt file in the 'DOPUS' folder.  Bugs/Requests text also added.

ADDED: A few bits of text here and there for advanced users, regarding the finer points of
~~~~~    the AIAB setup - do a search for *.txt etc. if you're up for it ;)
ADDED:   A basic 'Game Runner' button for playing incompatible HD-Games from Workbench.  To
~~~~~    use, just select the 'Game Runner' entry from the AIAB StartMenu--->Mixed Tools.
         A 'Drop Game Here' button will appear at the top of the screen, and should degrade
         the Amiga (using JST) whenever game icons are dropped onto it. Im not promising a
         100% success rate, but it could make all the difference!

	 NB: Dont forget the 'Crap Boot' option that allows you boot into a *highly* cut-down
	 ~~ AIAB Workbench setup, ideal for playing older HD-installed games from. To use,
	      just hold down the left mouse-button when booting the 'Amiga' (it might take a
	      few goes if you have a really fast PC...).

ADDED: Picasso96.guide. Apologies to the Picasso96 team for not including this in previous
~~~~~    releases.  I'd like to point out that Picasso96 is in fact shareware, and acts as an
         integral part of the AIAB package.  You should therefore consider registering the
         software to encourage future Amiga development if you use Picasso96 modes regularly.
TWEAKED: The s:Startup-Sequence yet again to add a one second pause (to test for the LMB),
~~~~~~~  and hence use the 'Crap Boot' option) that can be commented out if you dont want to
	 wait. I also added support for a possible (!) 'AIAB-JIT' pack at a later date, for
	 nice things like Birdie etc.

TWEAKED: The Workbench titlebar text. AIAB now uses a Scalos plugin to print the contents of
~~~~~~~  'ENVARC:AIAB-Version', which should make changing the titlebar text easier (?)
TWEAKED: The AIAB installation to add some text at the beginning so that people who havent
~~~~~~~  read the docs/installation guide [sigh...] will have a clue about what to do ;)

ADDED: FreeWheel, by Alastair M. Robinson. This cute little programme ought to allow the
~~~~~    'wheel' on most mice to function in AIAB.  You will be asked when you first install
         AIAB if you wish to enable this function.  Also, you might want to configure the
         programme for your own needs (I dont own a wheelmouse!), to do this just use the
         'ctrl alt f' hotkey, or select 'FreeWheel' from the 'Commodities' entry of the AIAB
         Start-Menu.  Thanks to Stephen Cooke for suggesting this addition.
TWEAKED: The s:ScreenTabCommodities  list to remove any defunct entries.  This file is used
~~~~~~~  to display the little images in the 'Commodities' entry of the AIAB Start-Menu.

TWEAKED: The DirectoryOpus config file to add a workaround for the 'Cant delete empty folders
~~~~~~~  problem in WinUAE'.  Click the 'DELETE' button with the *right* mouse button to use
         it.  Also, the 'Arc Ext.' and 'ShowFile' buttons now wait for the mouse button to be
         clicked before closing the Shell, thus giving the user 'more time on the ball' ;)
         Thanks to Tomasz Schmidt for pointing this out.
	 NB:  The 'Delete UAE' button *should* be redundant, thanks to the new filesystem
	 ~~   code introduced in (around) WinUAE 0.8.13+, but I've kept it in, just in case ;)
	 I also noticed that DOPUS uses its own palette, rather than just using the Workbench
	 pens, so have tweaked this to look more like the current Workbench colour-scheme.
	 Finally, I adjusted the width of the DOPUS window a few pixels so that files show the
	 correct filesize (whereas before the last '0' was cut-off) on the latest version.
REMOVED: 'PatchControl' in C: directory, and reference in Startup-Sequence.  I cant remember
~~~~~~~  what exactly this command did - possibly to help the OS out when 20 or so patches
	 are all running at the same time - but Im pretty sure we dont need it anymore.

REMOVED: Some more MUI classes, which are only used by internet applications. These files
~~~~~~~  have been moved into the 'new imporved' AIAB-Internet.zip package.
		Gone:		MUI:libs/mui/bookmarks.mcc
				MUI:libs/mui/textinput.mcc
				MUI:libs/mui/textinput.mcp
				MUI:libs/mui/textinputscroll.mcc
         During my updating, I also found and copied over a slightly newer 'ListTree' class.
	 Finally, I think I've solved the problem with the 'NListViews.mcp' class locking-up
	 the MUI prefs program, by adding 'BetterString.mcc' and 'HotKeyString.mcc' classes.
	 It increases the filesize of the AIAB archive, but should hopefully improve stability.
	 Thanks to Didier Sandra for pointing out the crashes to me.
ADDED:   Replacement gadget classes by Stephan Rupprecht (adapted from the AROS versions by
~~~~~    Georg Steger).  These classes differ from the original Amiga ones, in that they can
         utilise the greater number of colours on Hi/Truecolour screens. Try the palette
         selector in any MUI-based programme and you'll see what I mean.

		CLASSES:gadgets/colourwheel.gadget			      (version 44.7 )
		CLASSES:gadgets/gradientslider.gadget			      (version 44.6 )

         Thanks to Stephan for letting me use these files (and Georg for the initial work)

	 NB: These new classes are more or less the same ones found in OS3.9, Cor.....!
	 ~~

UPDATED: The Welcome! text, to point out that PPaint can be downloaded from Aminet, in case
~~~~~~~  anyone didn't already know.....(the topic cropped up in the mailing list).  Whilst I
	 was editing, I also added some information about the 'GameRunner' button, and a page
	 of text about using the provided presets in order to change the look of AIAB.
	 Moreover, the 'Speed Testing' page contains some updated information.
TWEAKED: The title text shown in Workbench root windows, using Scalos.  Should be more
~~~~~~~  relevant to UAE harddrives/hardfolders now (eg. does not show 'xx MB in use').

TWEAKED: Received an improved AIAB.ico from Guy Hancock which should look better on dark
~~~~~~~  desktops.  The two AIAB icons I made have been deleted, because they were, well...
	 shit - they weren't even proper icons, hence their lack of transparency in Win2k.
ADDED:   A workaround to allow Iconizer to change NewIcons.  Scalos doesnt use the NI patch,
~~~~~    meaning Iconizer did not show them correctly.  Anyway, I've added a little 'remedy
         script to the AIAB Start-Menu until I find a better solution.

ADDED: MrFujis-PIII700mhz SysSpeed module. I made this whilst visiting my mate Daymo down
~~~~~    in Southend, on an overclocked 849mhz system, so its definately genuine.  Although
         its unlikely for the time-being, if your machine is significantly faster, make a
         module, and email it to me!
TWEAKED: The MCP.config, turning off the 'BorderBlank' patch.  This basically puts a black
~~~~~~~  border around the ECS screens rather than the colour 0, however since were using P96
         we dont need such a patch enabled! This was bought to my attention by a small bench
         -mark programme (called 'WhichAmiga' now in C:) which measured my setup at 14mhz with
         the 'BorderBlank' patch switched on, but 18mhz with it swithced off - strange, huh?

	 UPDATE: The MCP.config has also had a few extra tweaks that may/may not speed up the
	 ~~~~~~   system.  Things like QuickDraw/Layers patches being disabled (apparently,
		  under Picasso96 they are not required), and a few 68040 CPU specific things
		  switched on, for future UAE JIT releases.
TWEAKED: The 'Presets' folder structure, adding a '!GUIPresets' folder, and moving everything
~~~~~~~  related to VisualPrefs in there.  I've also added a BeOS-style colourscheme by Paul
         O'Brein. Dont forget to send me your own VP settings if you've changed them.

TWEAKED: Default GUI settings. VisualPrefs now allows bold/italic text to be used for window
~~~~~~~  titles, which looks quite good and is therefore enabled.  I've also changed the look
         of cyclemenus so that they appear more like the standard popupmenus.
	 Moreover a tiny patch called 'TitleShadow' has been added, which adds a nice shadow
	 to the window-title text (if you dont like it, just comment it out in aiab-startup)
	 The author, Peter Gordon, claims this is quite a 'kludge' but I think it works well
	 enough to include in AIAB ;)  Either way, I've asked Massimo Tantignone if it can be
	 added to a future VisualPrefs release ;)
	 For added consistency, the titles of the context-sensitive popupmenus have also been
	 given the shadowed treatment - AIAB is just getting *too* professional now! ;)
         Still on the GUI front, theres a new 'Watery' background pattern, which I found on
         the net.  It was a bit bright to start with, so I did some tweaking in PaintShopPro -
         graphicians might want to change the colour balances a little more if they find its
         not quite to their liking ;)  If anyone has similar styled tilable patterns, or knows
         a good website where they can be found, would they please email me? ;)
	 UPDATE:  I've just found http://www.grsites.com/textures/  which has loads on offer!
	 ~~~~~~
TWEAKED: The default MUI GUI settings a bit, using a new, slightly larger font. This is also
~~~~~~~  better for foreign users, as the extra characters are displayed correctly.
	 NB:  Changes will only be visible if a registered MUI.key is copied to the S: folder.
	 ~~
REDONE:  The font system completely.  Some fonts have been deleted, others replaced, but all
~~~~~~	 renamed to create a new family called 'AIAB fonts'.  To further improve the visual
	 quality, some fonts have been touched-up by hand (!) Heres a full run-down of where
	 they're used:
			AIAB-Icon		-	Workbench icon text
			AIAB-MUI -	MUI GUIs (new - see above)
			AIAB-Screen -	Workbench screen and WWW browser
			AIAB-ScreenBold 	-	Workbench titles
			AIAB-System		-	Fixed-font (shell, text editor etc.)

  • Ability to filter the game list. You can select if you want to seel all games, or only the available ones.
  • Roms now aren't analyzed everytime Nebula starts. They are checked when romsets are changed or when you press the Rescan button in the OTHER config screen.
  • Changed main 68000 core to Bart Trzynadlowski's Genital 68k, which is a bit faster than starscream, and has less bugs (perhaps none).
  • Rewritten the layer 2 drawing code. Rowscrolling problems are almost fixed (only missing avsp intro). It has caused a small slowdown, but with the little speedup of the main core the speed should be the same as before.
  • 19xx gfx problems fixed at last. If you use old savegames, then the problems will not be fixed until a stage change in the game.
  • As some people has reported that the new gfx code (v1.3 and later) is slower than the older one (1.2 and before), then I've added the ability to use the old gfx code using the -oldgfx command line option.
  • Sprite priority code has back to the original code that causes less gfx problems.
  • Implemented sprite bankswitching (one of the still unemulated features of the cps2 hardware)
  • Added PNG unfiltering modes (Sub,Up,Avg,Paeth). PNG files created with other tools should look right now.
  • Fixed most Raster problems. Things look a lot better. Only remaining some sprite problems.
  • Changed the Savegame format. Now the sound is correctly restored when loading a savegame. The old format is still recognized and loaded.
  • Data files (configuration and savegames) are not encrypted anymore. If you want info about the format of these files, send me an E-mail.
  • Fixed the "controller setting forgetting" bug. It's fixed now, but it requieres that you delete the old config files.
  • Added the ability to save the controller data as the default mapping for games using the same button layout.
  • GUI graphics can be changed (see -packgui option and the section below).

Bochs v.1.1.2 Bugfix 3 for Win 9X, Mac OS, & Unix, a PC 80x86 emulator has been released. This release contains the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:

  • implement diskd (second hard drive). You cannot have both a diskd and a cdromd.
  • latest bios version is now BIOS-bochs-2001_0517. This bios is required to use two hard disks.
  • enable newharddrivesupport by default. This was needed for ATAPI CDs, disks larger than 528MB, and maybe other things. It seemed like every time I had a wierd disk detection problem, it was because I had forgotten newharddrivesupport.
  • add --with-term GUI mode. uses text mode display only
  • add --enable-split-hd. Split hard drive mode allows several partial disk image files (e.g. win95-1, win95-2, win95-3) to be treated as one large file, so that you can store each partition in a separate file, if you get the file sizes to match the partition table boundaries. Split hard disk patch requires a new rombios, BIOS-bochs-2001_0509.
  • patches sitting in patches subdirectory:
    • patches/patch.lba. we have a patch to add LBA support, which Bryce grabbed from the plex86 source tree. I know that it compiles. But can someone suggest how to test it?
    • patches/patch.4meg-pages. Again, we just need a test case. Once we can test it, I'll put it in.
    • patches/patch.goswin-changes. These are diffs against 3/25/2000, and not all of them apply anymore because of our bug fixes.
