"FreePlay will be closing permanently on July 4th, 1998. There are many reasons for this (which I will not reveal until the 4th of July)"

FreePlay (along with Dave's Video Game Classics and PC Arcade) is one of the better arcade emulation sites out. He will be sadly missed...

There have been also some bugs fixed and some speed ups since the last DOS release."

Also, Archeide asked that I mention that he's been having problems with the SEAL sound library under Linux. If you have already used it or if you know another Linux sound library please send him an e-mail at [email protected].

TMNT Emulator Canceled Another emulator has been discontinued. The author of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle has just announced that he has canceled his emulator:

"Today, I am announcing the official end of development of the emulator on my side ...  I will not work on any other emulator, I enjoyed the experience, but it isn't my thing. I can assure you that in no way will I pick up the project again (unlike last time)... you have my last release and the ever improving MAME version (which will no doubt just become awesome). Please do not email me asking me to start up the project again, I will not."

The author cited two major reasons for his decision. One, that he got bored with it. Two, that he would rather spend his free time doing other things.

Reality64 Canceled Gordon Hollingworth has announced that Reality64 is no more. His message was as brief:

"Due to circumstances beyond my control I have been forced to terminate the Reality64 (N64 Emulator) project.

"I am not permitted to discuss the reasons why but it is certainly an unfortunate time for any kind of public software development (e.g. Emus)."

z26 ver 1.02 Released! John Saeger has released a new version of his Atari 2600 emulator for DOS. Here's what's new in version 1.02:

  • Fixed a problem that caused sound to be distorted on some systems when z26 was launched from a Windows 95 DOS box.
  • Pausing game turns off sound (again).
http://www.whimsey.com/z26/z26.html

VPCE News Part II Here's the latest on the problem just discovered with Virtual PC Engine:

"I scanned VPCE (DOS) for viruses, using McAfee VirusScan 3.1.6, Virus definitions 3.0.3102. That program didn't find any viruses.

"But I asked the user to send me a more detailed bug-report, it looks like a file-system corruption appears, when "Gradius" is run. He was able to reproduce the problem with two other Win95 computers.

"Solution:
- Don't run VPCE/DOS, until I find and fix the bug. Or register Magic Engine.
- If you really really really need to run VPCE/DOS, quit windows (Alt-F4, "Exit to DOS"), or don't start it on boot.

"Windows 95 doesn't have any memory protection, a program in DOS that accidentally writes something into unallocated memory can hurt a Windows running in the background. Oh, and don't forget that first beta versions of Word for Windows 95 had the same problem."

Emulator Releases Only This is just a quick announcement that  last Sunday, I had a partial hard drive failure. While my computer now boots, most programs do not run and Windows 95 refuses to recognize my PNP modem. I've decided to take this opportunity to upgrade my hard drive, modem, video card, etc. The parts should be in tomorrow night and it will take a couple days after that to install everything properly.

Luckily, I still have my 486 and I have been using that to update this page. Unfortunately, I don't have the patience to maintain a webpage on a 9600 modem, which is the real point of this announcement: EMU News Service is being updated on a "major-news-story" only basis (namely emulator releases) for the last few days and this policy will remain in effect till sometime this weekend, Monday at the latest.

Until then, here's a brief synopsis of today's happenings:

  • Arnon Gonçalves Cardoso has released version 0.60 of his MSX computer emulator for Java. Please note the new webpage.
  • Gollum has updated his Gameboy emulator for DOS, Boycott to version 0.83.
  • Catakig 1.10b has been released.
  • Hans de Goede has released X-Mame-0.31.0b1.
VPCE News The latest version of Virtual PC Engine *might* be infected with a virus. Yesterday, I received one complaint about it and today Jens Ch. Restemeier has issued the following statement:

"I just got an angry message from a user, who said that VPCE (MSDOS) has infected his machine with a virus and he had to reinstall Win95 because of it.

"- Please scan your machine for viruses, if you've used VPCE/MSDOS. (BTW: ALL binaries from the internet should be scanned for viruses.)
- I'll scan my machine for viruses. I'm almost sure, that it is clean, but I'll verify it.
- It IS possible, that the machine I used for the upload to GeoCities was infected, because it is accessible by the public, and there are a lot of assholes out there. There is a virus-scanner installed, but I don't know how good it is.
- If you've got a emulation site that mirrors the VPCE archive, and you've repackaged it, please scan it for viruses.
- I'm not using Win95, I can't say if there is any bug in Win95 or VPCE that can break your system. But there isn't any dangerous code in VPCE itself. I don't know about the DPMI server of Win95, the DPMI client in DJGPP or the libraries of DJGPP. Please run VPCE/DOS in plain MS-DOS mode.
- I didn't put any destructive code or a virus into VPCE. I don't need a cock-extension of the "I destroyed xxx computers" kind.

"Another note: The author of the Windows 95 port of VPCE told me, that he is too busy with work to continue. I'll need someone with good Win95 coding experiences, who wants to port VPCE to Windows 95."

New Atari800Win Released! Rich Lawrence has released version 1.9 beta 2 of Atari800Win. Here are the highlights:

  • Source merged in with main Atari800 project (excepting Win specific modules).
  • mmsystem (waveOut) sounds were reworked and sound great, even under NT.
  • Pokey interrupts implemented. Berzerk speech works, as well as other special pokey effects.
  • Sound is disabled when running full speed, since mmsystem and Dsound both get far too unstable when the Atari is running 5X or higher.
  • Added "Pokey update divisor" to Sound dialog. Set this higher for LOWER frequencies. This affects games that pound on Pokey to do things like speech.
  • Frame to frame timing is now very precise compared to previous versions and the timer code itself is also faster.
  • Display width has been limited to 336 pixels.
  • When the emulator is running "ahead" of the emulated Atari, it will return more time to Windows, making it easier to multitask with other programs in the background.
  • Sound now has a latency of 2 frames from the initial point it is played.  This improves stability in all sound modes but of course adds the latency.
  • After exhaustive testing of various stretched windowed modes, I have picked what seemed like the best overall performer.
  • A bug that could cause incorrect output to the error log was fixed.
  • The built-in UI of Atari800 is now supported, although redundant. Access it using Ctrl-Space while the emulator is running.
  • Removed PILL option from cartridge dialog; it confused people too much. It's still available from the Atari800 UI.
  • Fixed a bug in the hardware dialog (loosing track of ROM name selected)
  • Now reads the command line (even as a GUI app) much like other Atari800 ports.
  • The Atari HELP key exists - use the ` key. I couldn't use F1 because that will (someday) be Windows Help.
  • Added checkbox for SIO patch in Hardware dialog (turn off for some games)
  • The speed counter is now more accurate.
  • Volume slider works for WaveOut functions also now.
  • MFC is dynamically linked, to limit size of EXE.
  • Alt-Enter flips between DirectDraw full screen and windowed mode.
Atari800 is for Windows 9x and NT and uses DirectX.

http://www.davesclassics.com/mamewip.html

Neo Geo News Johan Köhler's Neo Geo emulator web page is back online, but unfortunately, there's not a lot of good news to report. First, the actual emulator has been permanently removed from the webpage and Johan is asking all webpage maintainers to remove it from their respective sites. The good news is that development of the Neo Geo emulator has not been halted - but there will be no more releases until this situation has been settled.

At the author's request, the Neo Geo emulator has been removed from EMU News Service.
