SNES9X v.1.39 for Win 9X Linux(libc6) & Solaris, a Nintendo SNES emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:
Added SDD-1 unknown graphics data logging at the dumper's request. A bit late
but might help with Street Fighter 2 Alpha's data dumping. Creates a
romname.dat file in the freeze file folder.
Implemented 16-bit texture support for OpenGL modes in Windows and Linux.
Had to support a new pixel format type to do it - RGB5551 (one bit of alpha)
which caused me some major problems - black was no longer always pixel value
zero!
Removed the Bump map OpenGL mode from the Windows port (didn't look so good
anyway and was slow).
Added a hidden novelty OpenGL mode (clue: a keyboard shortcut activates it)
Reverted back to FMod version 3.20 after reports that version 3.33 broke
AD3 support.
Implemented a better work-around for the broken select system call in the
Linux kernel - the original work-around was long-winded and stopped working
when I implemented OpenGL support under Linux.
Added the same speed-up hack to the OpenGL code that the Glide code already
supported. Basically, if your OpenGL implementation supports 16-bit textures
then OpenGL mode should be as fast, or faster than the 3dfx Glide mode.
Hopefully fixed Glide support.
Reverted back to the original colour blending code. The newer code, although
more accurate in most cases, had too many glitches and was slower.
Included multiple Japanese games fixes from Iswashi San.
Fixed a timing problem caused by a speed up hack that was affecting Top Gear
300. No the game still isn't playable yet, but I noticed the problem while
investigating the DSP-4 chip used by the game.
Follow the link for SNES9X in the Console Emulation section.
22:08EST - GNUBoy v.1.0.2 for DOS & Win 9X Released
GNUBoy v.1.0.2 for DOS & Win 9X, a Nintendo Gameboy emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:
A minor problem in the frequency sweep function on sound channel 1 was
fixed, correcting the sound of the ice beam and metroid encounter
sound in Metroid 2.
Sound channel 3 waveform data is now trashed when the sound is
played. This makes it more difficult for games and demos to detect
that they are running on an emulator.
The channel 3 waveform is now properly initialized in both DMG and CGB
modes. Before it was incorrectly initialized to have frequency 16
times too high, and the initial "random noise" pattern exhibited by
DMG wasn't emulated. R-Type now sounds much better.
The sound length register for channel 3 now works properly, fixing the
title screen music in MegaMan 2. No thanks to gbspec.txt for having
blatently wrong info about this matter.
Major problems with sound quality on channel 4 (noise) have been
fixed, and the pseudorandom sequence has been replaced to very closely
resemble that of a real Gameboy, thanks to the hard work of Lord
Nightmare. All these changes make a significant improvement in many
games, notably Metroid 2, Final Fantasy Legend II and III, Camp
Deadly, and Wario Land.
Stereo channels are no longer backwards.
The DMG STAT register write bug, which causes an interrupt if the STAT
register is written while in HBLANK or VBLANK, is now emulated. This
fixes Legend of Zerd and probably any other DMG game that will not run
on a real Gameboy Color.
A hack/potential fix for a problem that kept Konami Collection Vol 1
from working has been put in place.
A major interrupt bug that prevented Amazing Penguin from running has
been fixed.
Several bugs that could have resulted in crashes under strange
circumstances have been fixed.
Other minor sound issues have been tweaked or fixed.
Follow the link for GNUBoy in the Portable-Console Emulation section.
22:01EST - Nebula v.1.91 for Win 9X Released
Nebula v.1.91 for Win 9X, a Multi-Arcade emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:
Added a "Smart" romset name recognition, you must enable it setting
StrictRomsets=0 in NEBULA.INI and then use the "Find Neogeo" button in
the OTHERS menu. It will recognize the romsets with different names
than the MAME ones but the files (size, CRC) must be MAME compilant.
If nebula is unable to find a match with its internal database it will
try to build a new romset (similar to Neoragex import feature) with
the files in the zip. Nebula can recognize MVS and MGD dumps, so your
old romsets will work now. Note that that feature may cause gfx or
game problems because the neogeo dumps aren't homogeneus, so don't
mail me about gfx or game problems if you aren't using strict name
matches. Remember to hit Scan Roms after looking for neogeo roms.
Corrected X Zoom tables with values checked in the original board.
Corrected Y Zoom tables (You'll need to have the ng-lo.rom file
inside your NEOGEO.ZIP file).
Balanced AY and YM volumes.
New interpolation mode for Frecuency control type (Delta-t) ADPCM
sound samples, this one is better (and faster) for high pitched
samples (for example arina or dandy j's stages in Wakuwak7).
Delta-t samples were always interpolated in previous versions, now
interpolation for these samples is only used if it's enabled in
the menu. (Having interpolation disabled is faster, but sounds
much worse (many audible resampling artifacts) I recommend having
interpolation always enabled (it's not much slower))
Added the new Kof99 decrypted set (kof99d), you'll need files from
the 3 kof99 romsets, read the MINIFAQ.
Fixed double dragon (and probably many more) FMV intro sound
problems.
Added Hotkeys. Configure the button mapping for each hotkey in the
HOTKEYS.DAT file (there are separated configs for CPS and neogeo games)
and then assign keys in the Control menu to the 6 Hotkeys available (scroll
down the control menu to see the keys).
Added a new stretch mode called "Keep aspect" that keeps the original
aspect while using the bigger possible screen area (good for vertical games).
Added FreePlay switch to the Machine Settings menu.
Added a Control configuration menu for GUI keys, you can map there
the keys you want to use to move the cursor in the GUI/Game menus.
This menu is shown when you select the CONTROL menu and there is no
game selected. To deselect the currently selected game, press the
right mouse button or the button assigned to "Back" in the GUI keys
menu.
Rewritten the rom checking code. Now it's faster and has a progress
bar. Anyways, I recommend not to have AutoAnalyze enabled in NEbula.ini
due to the big amount of romsets supported, better use the Scan Roms
button when you add new roms.

23:36EST - Z26 v.1.48 for DOS Released
Z26 v.1.48 for DOS, an Atari 2600 emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:
Screen capture now works in all video modes. If you hold down the = key, you get a fairly continuous stream of pcx files.
New fast video modes. These are accessed with the -e (for Eckhard?) command line switch. This allows the Mode-X routines to do 32-bit accesses to the
video card. On my computer this more than doubles the speed of the emulator when running in these modes. Unfortunately, they may not work on all video
cards. The -e command line switch also enables tall and narrow 160 pixel video modes for modes 0, 1, 2, and 3. These are very fast modes, and they give
your games a Vectrex like feel.
Added support for a couple of new ROM images.
Fixed a stack overflow bug in the GUI.
Thanks to Eckhard Stolberg for help with this version. I did not suspect that so much more speed could be had from the video system.

Disadvantages of 0.8.16 over 0.8.14
1. Some screens are vertically off centered by a good 50 or more pixels, even with
centering enabled/disabled.
2. Although the sound is in sync when capturing AVI, the actual sound emulation can
still do with some work, sfx not playing or weird noises.
3. Setup can be tedious, takes several trys to get a working config.

44.1khz sample accuracy if voices or other sampled sounds are used.
Added .PNG screenshot saving (F12). Screenshots are saved to a "shots" subdirectory.
(Changed Start button to C, this was to stop the game pausing when you press
enter to okay a dialog.)
Added Pause function
Added frame advance function
Fixed Ghouls 'N Ghosts (sprite offset)
Changed volume table based on Maxim's real SMS experiments
Added a disable switch for the Red/Blue mode (e.g. for playing 3D games in 2D mode)

optimize for speed when simulating one processor. Now 1-processor performance should be equivalent to 1.1.2.
[ #432488 ] SMP:assert "n_logfn MAX_LOGFNS" fails increase MAX_LOGFNS since we ran out of them on an SMP
simulation with 4 processors
[ #432491 ] SMP: CPUID says no APIC feature clean up inconsistent use of BX_SUPPORT_APIC and BX_APIC_SUPPORT,
which caused the CPUID to report no APIC was present
[ #431025 ] --enable-external-device-models broken removed configure options for external-device-models and
external-cpu-memory. These don't work and aren't going to be fixed.
[ #429448 ] configure: -lreadline when not there Now configure allows you to choose not to use readline, even if it's
found on your system.
[ #428915 ] apply extended keyboard patch extended keyboard patch by Dave Poirier [email protected]
updated rombios to version 1.13. This fixes several problems:
[ #430472 ] DOS HIMEM "A20 line" error This problem was apparantly caused when Bryce added a function that prints
the BIOS version, and he called it too early in the boot process. Now the same function is called later, and it doesn't
break the A20.
[ #431010 ] SMP structure overwritten in v1.2 SMP structures were getting overwritten by BCC-generated data,
preventing SMP operating systems from detecting that other processors were available.
[ #431016 ] bios: SMP struct has wrong entry count SMP structure had the wrong entry counts
very minor doc updates (typos, replace broken link to mtools info)
quit when the user clicks the power button, even if they have disabled panics.
[ #428222 ] vga font not installed added script called "install-x11-fonts" which should help people install the VGA font on
X windows systems, if it isn't already there.

17:56EST - POSE v.3.3 for Win 9X, Mac OS, & Unix Released
POSE v.3.3 for Win 9X, Mac OS, & Unix, a 3Com Palm Pilot emulator has been released. This release includes the following features, enhancements, and bugfixes:
Added Visor Edge support. [James Phillips]
(Windows) Added HandEra 330 support. [Dan Fahrion]
Better checking for invalid database names as .prc, .pdb, and .pqa files are installed.
Error message now also includes more text describing why the name is invalid.
When reporting invalid database dates when installing a file, now include the name of
the file containing the database. [David A. Desrosiers]
Better error message when reporting that a .prc, .pdb, and .pqa file cannot be
installed because one of its resources or records is too large.
Removed feature of Gremlins which would turn the device off and on every once and
a while. The mechanism used to perform this could alter the emulated hardware
timers and clocks, such that two runs of the same Gremlin number would result in
different outcomes.
Include preliminary plug-in support. Current support extends to letting external
plug-ins patch traps and access memory. [Anthony Fishbeck]
Internal change: continuing work to remove Dragonball-specific assumptions from the
source code in preparation for adding ARM support.
Added support for downloading ROMs over USB on Mac and Windows. Note that the
ROM Transfer application fails to work on Handspring devices, and so unless
someone figures out why, you can't download those ROMs. And though you can
download Sony CLIE ROMs, Palm's version of Poser doesn't not emulate those
devices, so performing that exercise is not very useful. Which means that the
addition of this feature is of most benefit to those with Palm m500s and m505s.
Support backlighting (two levels of brightness) for m505.
Report direct access to BitmapType data structures.
Report calls to functions that will no longer be available on future versions of Palm
OS.
Corrected minimum RAM sizes for Palm m500 and m505 (was 2MB, now 8MB).
(Mac) Added better support for transliterating characters exchanged between the host
and Palm OS emulated clipboard.
(Windows) The popup menu would always appear on the primary monitor on a
multi-monitor system. [David Vaportrails]
Palm m500/m505 alarm LED is green, not red.
(Unix) GCC 3.0 support: added where needed; no longer assume
vector::iterator is a pointer type; add exception specifications where needed;
recognize that "map" is in the std namespace. [John Marshall]
4(Windows) Added "Stay On Top" checkbox to Skins dialog. [Jonathan Cox]
(Unix) Re-established X Windows window class (missing from Poser 3.2). [Chris Ridd]
(Unix) Link with OpenGL if it is installed (required by FLTK). [Holger Klawitter]
(Unix) SuSE 7.1 is rather pedantic and refuses to compile source code containing calls
to tmpnam in it. Therefore, on Unix, if mkstemp is available, use that instead. Note
that this mean that if you call HostTmpNam to get a temp file name, be warned that
the file will already exist (but will still need to be opened). [Holger Klawitter]
In Poser's implementations of NetLibSend, NetLibSendPB, NetLibReceive,
NetLibReceivePB, and NetLibDmReceive (used when NetLib redirection is turned on),
no longer try to be clever about when to call send vs. sendto or recv vs recvfrom.
Instead, always call sendto and recvfrom. That should provide the same
characteristics as the Palm OS NetLib calls. [Gary Gorsline]
In order to support the various options in the Reset dialog, Poser emulates the
pressing of the appropriate hard keys. Pressing the key down worked fine, but
Poser's determination of when to release the key wasn't always correct, and the Palm
OS would sometimes fail to notice that the key was ever down. Poser now tries a
different approach that should be more definitive. [Mike McCollister]
Fixed profiling bug. The memory cycles incurred fetching the opcodes were not being
counted.
Fixed profiling bug. Poser performs a lot of processing when system functions are
called. Some of this processing would access emulated memory, causing the cycles to
do so to be counted against the running application. This was incorrect. Poser's
operations should as transparent as possible and not show up on profiling data.
Added two HostControl functions to support CodeWarrior in the setting of data
watchpoints.
Added Gremlin Horde logging information: ROM version, ROM file name, RAM size,
device name; statistics regarding the number of events each Gremlin was run for
before generating an error; and error frequency and type statistics.
Rearranged New Horde dialog, and added Select All / Deselect capability for the
Applications list, and a menu from which the application to be launched first can be
selected.
Changed behavior of application switching -- SysUIAppSwitch is called on a random
application from the list of applications selected in the New Horde dialog, rather than
having a random button pressed.
Resuming a Horde run from a .psf file now terminates correctly, at the maximum
depth originally specified, rather than at the next switching boundary, as before.
International Strict Checks (for checking multi-byte character display routines) is now
a debugging option.
Stepping a halted Gremlin now behaves identically when running a single Gremlin or a
Horde.
Files generated during Profiling now have unique names.
New warning displayed if comm port could not be opened on the host.
Added -pref command line option (-preference or -d can by used as synonyms). This
option changes preferences as stored in the preference file. Its parameter has the
form "key=value", and is treated the same way as the "key=value" lines found in the
preference file.
Enabled the long-stillborn Logging Options for Warnings and Errors. Checking these
options will log the text of message dialogs just before they are displayed. You can
then use this text in bug reports (or you can just use Ctrl-C or your platform's
equivalent to copy the text from the dialog to the clipboard, as mentioned in a
previous release note).
Added "ContinueOnWarnings" and "ExitOnErrors" preferences (along with UI for them
in the Debug Options dialog). If logging for warnings is enabled and
ContinueOnWarnings is true, warning dialogs will be dismissed as if the user had
pressed the Continue button. If logging for errors is enabled and ExitOnErrors is true,
fatal error dialogs result in Poser exiting.
Added "SilentRunning" preference. Setting this value to non-zero has the same effect
as enabling the following separately controlled preferences: LogErrorMessages,
LogWarningMessages, ContinueOnWarnings, and ExitOnErrors.
Added "DialogBeep" preference (along with UI for it in the Debug Options dialog).
Setting this value to non-zero causes Poser to beep every 2 seconds that a message
dialog is displayed. So as to not annoy your co-workers if you're not around to hear
it, Poser will stop the beeping after 1 minute.
(Windows) If ExitOnErrors or SilentRunning is turned on, Poser exits with a status
code of 2 if a fatal error had occurred at any time during execution, a status code of
1 if a warning had occurred any time during execution, and a status code of 0 if no
errors or warnings occurred.
Changed the behavior of error handling when running a single Gremlin vs. running a
Horde. Originally, when there was only the ability to run a single Gremlin, Poser would
display all warnings and errors as they occurred. Later, when Hordes was added, it
was felt that running multiple Gremlins was more of a "batch" operation, and so the
user should not be bothered with error messages. Instead, if a Gremlin range was
specified in the New Horde dialog, warnings and errors were logged to a file, the
Gremlin resulting in the message was terminated, and Poser would switch to the next
Gremlin. But if the user specified to run only a single Gremlin in the New Horde
dialog, they'd get the original behavior of seeing error dialogs as they occurred. Now,
that behavior has been made consistent with the original behavior: by default, the
user will see warnings and errors in dialogs as they occur. If this is not desired, they
can use the "ContinueOnWarnings" and "ExitOnErrors" preferences to log the
messages instead.
Gremlins used to implicitly log error and warning messages. Now that there is a UI for
specifying whether or not to log messages, Gremlins no long automatically does that.
To support the change, Poser 3.3 will automatically turns on error and warning
message logging for Gremlins the first time you run it.
(Mac, Windows) When loading or saving preferences, Poser now first looks for a
preferences file in the same directory as itself. If it finds that, it uses that as the
preferences file. Otherwise, it uses the old behavior of using the system's designated
location for preference files.
Profiling fix: when converting cycle counts into time, make use of the actual CPU
speed instead of assuming 16MHz.
(Windows) Fixed problem where a user could click on the Logging Options of the New
Gremlin dialog multiple times, bringing up multiple Logging dialog boxes.
Indicate the active/inactive state of the Emulator's window by lightening it if it's
inactive.
(Mac) Fixed many problems with calling HostGetFile, HostPutFile, etc. Calling these
functions would crash, and even if they worked, they wouldn't display any files, just
folders. [Hal Mueller]
Check for screen access in the storage heap. The screen is not normally stored in the
storage heap, but the hardware supports it and SuperWaba 2.0b3 puts it there.
[Guilherme C. Hazan]
Fixed memory leak that could occur if an application running under Gremlins
attempted to call SysUIAppSwitch in order to launc another application, that
application took a command parameter block, and that application was not on the list
of applications that could be run under Gremlins. The command parameter block was
leaked.
Added two new UI-less preferences: LogFileSize and LogDefaultDir. The former
specifies the number of bytes that can be written to the log file before old bytes are
discarded. HostSetLogFileSize is still supported, but calling HostSetPreference will now
do the same thing. LogDefaultDir specifies where you want log files stored. If a
Gremlin is running, log files will be stored in the Gremlin output file, as before. But
you can use LogDefaultDir to specify a directory for log files generated while not
running Gremlins. If this preference is not specified, log files are written to the
Emulator directory, as before. The existence of this preference and the -pref
command-line option makes the old never-implemented -log_save_dir command-line
option obsolete.

This release has quick fixes for some troublesome bugs. Better
fixes may be forthcoming in a later version. Thanks to Jean-Marc Le
Peuvedic and Frederic Vecoven for problem reports and suggestions.
Changed my email address, as I have left Compaq.
Bug fix: Output to the X server was not always being flushed in a
timely manner. It is now flushed at the frequency of the timer
interrupt on the machine being emulated (30 to 60 times per second).
This fixes problems with the display not being updated when it should
have been in certain games and operating systems.
Added a heuristic to flush the key transition queue if the Z-80
program does not poll the keyboard often enough. Right now this is
set to go off if more than 2 timer interrupt ticks go by without a
poll. This change should get rid of the unwanted typeahead effect
previously seen in certain situations, such as when a game does some
screen flashing or sound effects between levels without polling the
keyboard.
Fixed a compile error on non-Linux platforms.
