Fortune City Down As of this writing, all of Fortune City's webpages are down. They've posted a short message to say that the problem lies in a power failure:

"Due a complete power outage at the Chantilly Data Center, FortuneCity is currently offline. Engineers are currently working on this problem and as soon as we have an ETA on service being restored we will post details."

This affects several emulation sites such as VBEmu, SNEeSe, Nestra, VPCE and the Korean translation of EMU News Service.

SloMo 0.23b7 Released Don Jarrett has added support for 3 new games to SloMo. The new games are Space Chasers, Cosmic Monsters and Space Phantoms. SloMo is a multi-arcade game emulator for Window 9x/NT.

http://members.tripod.com/~Frodo4/slomo.html

Frodo/MacOS Updated Richard Bannister has also released a new version of his Commodore 64 emulator. Here's what's new in version 4.1.6:

  • Calmed down the Regulate Speed option - Frodo is now more careful about increasing the frame rate. This, I hope, should solve a lot of the problems of choppy sound experienced by users of v4.1.5.
  • Rewrote a lot of the mac specific code for speed and stability. This
  • version is about 10% faster than v4.1.5.
  • Frodo now requires the Appearance Manager. This was not an easy decision to take - but I think the end result is worth it. Frodo's interface has changed quite a bit from previous versions - I hope people like the improvements.
  • Frodo can now quit the finder on loading. This option is off by default, but you can turn it on in the settings dialog.
  • Frodo can now switch the monitor to the optimum resolution automatically in Full Screen mode. This can be turned off in the settings dialog.
  • Finally Frodo can emulate both Joysticks at the same time. You can also configure them now using the Joysticks... option in the Options menu.
  • Removed the ability to Copy/Save/Print video at different sizes. It was completely pointless - and it occupied more than 20K of disk space across the different versions of Frodo. These functions always output a single size image now.
  • Your sound preference is now saved in the preferences - if you prefer sound off, you will no longer have to do it each time you run Frodo.
  • Frodo now cleans up after itself properly when you quit.
  • Fixed an error in the RAM Image handling that set the file's type/creator to a RAM image whether it was in fact a RAM image or not.
  • Tape and Disk files which have been accidentally configured as RAM Images can now still be used. This is for people affected by the above.
  • Recompiled with CodeWarrior Pro 4.

PSyKe's Future In Jeopardy Rasky has updated his webpage with some possibly bad news. He's going to take a small break (about a month) from his PlayStation emulator and then he will decide whether he will continue working on PSyKe:

"But, I'm sorry, I've a very bad news for you all. PSyKe is officially suspended for a month. mOoNsHaDo and me had some discussions in last days, and he decided to leave the team. I have some very talented friends that want to help me continuing PSyKe, but I'm not so sure that *I* want to continue PSyKe. This is why I'm suspending it for a month: I need to think. I hope that mOoNsHaDo will change his mind and go back working on it, I'm waiting for him. Otherwise, I'll let you all know what I'll do at the end of October. The site should not been updated until that date. And, please, please, don't mail me: I've decided to suspend it, and your mails are simply useless."

- Rasky

NSFE To Use TrueReality Code In a surprising announcement, Gordon Hollingworth has
decided to merge parts of Niki Waibel's Nintendo 64 emulator (TrueRealty) into his own Nintendo 64 emulator (NSFE). Gordon and Niki have been discussing this for some time now (they both share the same webpage). By combining the best of TrueReality's emulation core and NSFE's GUI/OpenGL code, they hope to create "a fully functional N64 emulator for Windows, UNIX, DOS, MAC etc." When released, NSFE will be available as both a binary and source code.

Problems at Xoom.com Earlier this evening, Xoom.com suffered a hardware failure on one of their RAID disk arrays. Several emulation web sites such as Come Back 64 (Commodore 64 emulator for DOS) and Robert Bögniel's Phoenix emulator are down. Xoom.com estimates that these problems will be fixed within 12 hours.

NSFE Due In October Gordon Hollingworth has announced that the first release of NSFE (the successor to Reality64) *should* be released sometime in October. It will be more advanced than the original Reality64 but will not be able to play any commercial games. It will, however, have an integrated debugger (similar to PSEmu Pro), so Gordon's billing this a 'developer' release since it may be of some use to N64 demo programmers. NSFE is a Nintendo 64 emulator for Windows.

z26 1.12 Released! John Saeger has just released a brand new version of his Atari 2600 emulator for DOS. Here's what's new:

Retrocade Released! After months and months of anticipation, Retrocade for DOS is finally here! It's been a long time since Neil Bradley first announced Retrocade way back in February, so I'm glad to say that it's been well-worth the wait. Retrocade is an amazing work, especially considering this is only a 'debut' release. Just take a look at a small sampling of its features:

  • Support for 100 games!
  • Sound Support
  • Joystick Support (including Wingman Warrior)
  • GUI - and - Command line interfaces
  • Save States
  • Screenshots
  • High Score Saving
OK, enough hype, on to the links: Downloads: Also note that Retrocade for DOS requires dos4gw.zip. You probably already have this file, but I've uploaded a copy just in case.

Retrocade is very much a group effort. Looking at the Retrocade's development staff is a lot like looking at a who's who list of emulation greats:

  • Richard Bannister
  • Paul Biondich
  • Neil Bradley
  • Valerie Bradley
  • Neill Corlett
  • Mike Cuddy
  • Ron Fries
  • Aaron Giles
  • Peter Hirschberg
  • Pat Lawrence
  • Brian Levine
  • Ed Massey
  • Jeff Mercer
  • Jeff Mitchell
  • Zonn Moore
  • Brian Peek
  • Brian Stern
Now that Retrocade is finally out, why not join us in the EMU News Service Chat Room to get the latest on Retrocade. As of this writing, only the DOS version is out, ports for Windows 95, Unix, Macintosh and ARM are in the works. Stay tuned...

He normally worked on Snes9X when traveling from between his work and his home. But  he can't work on Snes9X at home or at work, so until his portable is fixed or until he gets a new one, Snes9X development is on a halt. I myself am in a phase of switching jobs and am VERY busy these last few weeks so I haven't been able to work on the Windows port that much. If there are any programmers out there with Borland C++ Builder 3 experience AND Visual C++ experience AND want to help on the Windows version then please mail me... (you need both Visual C++ and Borland C++ Builder 3 to compile the Windows source)"

Fortunately, there is some good news to report. The BeOS port of Snes9x was updated to version 1.05c. This is a minor update that fixes a few bugs.

ZSNES 0.600 Released! _Demo_ and zsKnight have just released a brand new version of ZSNES just a few minutes ago. As you can guess from the version number, this is a major update. First of all, ZSNES has a brand new 16-bit graphics engine. The GUI has been completely revised and there are numerous bugfixes, so ZSNES' compatibility rate should be higher than ever before. Other new features include MultiTap (4 player) support and GamePad Pro support. For a complete list of what's new of click here. Also, a new programmer has joined the ZSNES team, Pharos. Finally, one of the more tantalizing things about the new ZSNES is that there is a now a drop down menu titled "Netplay". Although it's reserved for future use, I think network play is a great idea and I foresee it becoming a big trend in emulation.

  • Pause shows paused text on Atari screen (for full screen modes)
  • Fixed crash bug that sometimes occurred changing artifacting modes

New PSEmu Pro released this morning!

Genesis Music Tech Request A few weeks ago, Genecyst x.xx was released. One of the new features was the ability to log the YM2612/PSG register writes to a .GYM file. In the readme.txt file, Sardu writes "Someone (not me) could possibly write a utility to convert this data into a .MID or other music file." Well, programmer Paul Jensen is doing exactly that and he would like to make a tech request:

"I have started development on a utility that will convert Genecyst's .GYM files (YM2612 log files) to standard MIDI format files.  So far, the utility can read from a .GYM file, and read from/write to a .MID file.  All that's left is to convert the YM2612 registers and values to MIDI commands and values. I am looking for as much information as I can find on the Yamaha YM2612 used in the MegaDrive/Genesis."

You can contact him at [email protected].

New PSyKe Due Out By End of Month With all the hoopla surrounding the release of PSEmu Pro last week, you might think that PSEmu Pro is the only PlayStation emulator around. Not true. PSyKe burst on the scene earlier this year and continues to get better. Just today, the PSyKe webpage was updated with the latest news on PSyKe's progress:

"I have worked during last month basically on CPU, and I've obtained about a 30% speed increase, that can be see mostly with 2D games: for example, Metal Slug now is full frame rate on my P166 with 3DFX. Memory cards emulation is almost complete, I have to fix only some bugs and add support for memcard files in the GUI. I have fixed also some bugs in CDROM emulation (eg. Wipeout 2097 demo - and probably also the full game - works ok), and in the pad emulation (some games didn't found the controllers). In these days I'm working on MDEC skipping, so that PSyKe will skip all the movies, instead of simply freezing. All this stuff will be in PSyKe 0.20, that will be probably released at the end of September."

- RaskY
Co-Author of PSyKe

Please note that the next release *should* be out by the end of the month - but this is no guarentee that it will. Please do not bother the authors about the exact release date. Whenever it comes out, you'll find out here.

For Unix users, Sadruddin Rejeb has been working on a PlayStation emulator called Sope. Although not as advanced as PSyKe or PSEmu, the T-Rex demo is working almost perfectly now.

X-Mame 0.34b2.1 Released! Hans De Goede has just released version 0.34 Beta 2.1 of MAME for Unix!

"Well after hunting an obscure repeating hard hang with my home machine, which has luckily been solved. I've finally found the time todo 34b2.

"There are lots of little changes but the one which should make you all happy is the new fileio code, please read README.unix for the possibility's. README.unix has been greatly improved thanks to: Joseph E. Miele.

"Besides that 0.34b2's new way of building has broken the autogeneration of makefile.objs if some of you Perl guru's could take a look at makefile.dos, makefile.objs and conbtrib/porting.txt. And write a script to this automatically again It would be great. Then again doing it manually only takes about 5 minutes so if it's hard to write never mind."

- Hans De Goede
Author of XMame

Here's what's new in 0.34b2.1:

  • Everything from DOS 0.34b2.
  • Everything Unix from XMess 0.2b4.1
  • Fileio no supports gzipped files and a search path
  • Changed ${HOME}/xmame to ${HOME}/.xmame on popular request so move that dir ;)
  • Makefile.objs no is no longer autogenerated due to some changes in the dos makefile.
  • Updated contrib/porting.txt to include the manual creation of makefile.objs. Added contrib/lowercase which is used for this.
  • Changed fix.c to fix-comments.c which is a more accurate name.
  • Removed autogeneration of makefile.objs from make-makefiles.pl renamed it to fix-includes
  • Updated fix-mame to match the name changes of fix and make-makefiles.pl
  • The x86-asm m6808 core now also works on other i386 unices
X-Mame is the Unix port of MAME

NeoRAGE Controversy I'm not sure exactly how many people actually read "readme.txt" files, but if you downloaded the latest version of NeoRAGE, you probably noticed this...

"We are VERY disappointed in many people out there, we are doing a lot of work on our spare time and for free. And we couldn't imagine that so MANY people was so totally out of respect that they use a hacked version of NeoRAGE. There will always be some scum that doesn't hesitate to hack our work. Even to use a hacked version is respectless against us. When people that we trust and respect are doing it we are loosing our motivation.

"So don't expect any sound update soon, if ever to the public."

Authors of NeoRAGE

  • The following games spontaneously started working (possibly due to sound support):  Arkanoid, Arkanoid (Tayto version-- faster than Arkanoid), Gauntlet, Gauntlet 2, Karnov, Marble Madness (sorta), and Willow
  • Made a major hack to fix a possible bug in the OS/2 Profile functions causing the Quick List not to update immediately with a game added using the "Add one game" option.
  • Fixed a bug in the "scan for games" routine that caused zipped games not to be seen in the ROMs directory unless there was a zipped game in the MAME directory
  • Added a small hack that turned off the frame rate counter when MAME's settings is accessed

PSEmu Pro Preliminary Compatibility List Duddie and Tratax have published a preliminary compatibility list on their website. Only about 12 games are listed but I'm sure that'll increase as time goes on. From my own personal tests, I can say that Ridge Racer runs fine (although version 1.02 seemed to have less graphic distortions than 1.03), but Colony Wars, Twisted Metal, and Battle Arena Toshinden never get past the dreaded "black" screen.
